Big West Announces 2018 Women's Soccer All-Conference Team

2018 Big West Women's Soccer All-Conference Team

The major awards were spread out among four schools to highlight the announcement of the 2018 Big West Women’s Soccer All-Conference Team on Wednesday. 

Regular season champion Long Beach State took home three primary Big West awards with DANA
 FUJIKUNI as Midfielder of the Year, SARAH 
MAHER 
as Defensive Player of the Year and MAURICIO
 INGRASSIA
 as Coach of the Year.  RAISA
 STROM-OKIMOTO earned Offensive Player of the Year honors to become the first-ever recipient of the award from Hawai‘i while UC Irvine’s MADDIE
 NEWSOM was named Goalkeeper of the Year and Cal Poly’s MACKENZIE 
GEORGE earned Freshman of the Year accolades. 

The all-conference first team consisted of seven seniors, four juniors and two sophomores.  Three individuals claimed a repeat selection to the first team – Strom-Okimoto, Long Beach State’s ASHLEY 
GONZALES
 and Cal State Fullerton’s NANO
 ORONOZ.

• Recorded a hat-trick on the road, the first of her career (at Cal Poly)
• Earned two Big West Offensive Player of the Week awards in her senior campaign (Sept. 4 and Oct. 23)
• Recorded 51-straight starts for the Rainbow Wahine
• Helped Hawai‘i to its best-ever record in Big West action (4-4-0)
• Became the first-ever Offensive Player of the Year honoree from Hawai‘i

• Started every contest while anchoring Long Beach State’s defensive unit that only allowed 20 goals – tied for third-fewest among Big West schools
• Received Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 16
• Third-overall and second-straight honoree from the Beach to earn top defensive player following Kaitlin Fregulia (2017) and Taylor Nelson (2014)

• The senior’s four assists tied for second-most in league
• Played key role in fueling LBSU’s potent offense – ranked No. 1 in assists (31) and in points (91) and No. 2 in goals scored (30)

• Ranked No. 3 in the Big West in GAA, third in saves and fourth in save-percentage (.798)
• Notched a goal and three assists for five points on the season
• Tallied two shutouts this season while earning Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 9
• Recorded the second-most minutes between the posts among Big West goalkeepers (1761:18)



altCOACH OF THE YEAR • MAURICIO INGRASSIA, LONG BEACH STATE
• Earned his second Big West Coach of the Year award after receiving the honor in 2008
• Led LBSU to the program’s fifth Big West regular season championship and its first since sharing the title three ways in 2015
• Guided the Beach to a 10-5-3 overall record with a 5-1-2 mark in league for 17 points
