#CelebrateBig with Big West 50/35
Beginning in 2018-19, the Big West Conference embarks on a two-year celebration of achievements that coincide with the league’s 50th season of competition, as well as a 35th anniversary bash to honor the history of Big West women’s sports.
Created as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association with seven members from the state of California, the PCAA began its first season of competition in 1969. In the fall of 1983, the PCAA became the first western conference to incorporate women’s athletic programs.
Moving into its 20th year of existence, the PCAA changed its name to the Big West Conference on July 1, 1988, which was more representative of the conference’s growth beyond its California origins.
Throughout the season, the Big West will share the moments and stories that have shaped the conference over a half-century, with an emphasis on the contributions and accomplishments of its women’s student-athletes, coaches, and administrators.
This season’s campaign will dovetail into a year-long commemoration of the conference’s golden anniversary in 2019-20, which will culminate with the additions of new members CSU Bakersfield and UC San Diego into the Big West family.
Follow the Big West 50/35 celebration through the conference’s website (BigWest.org), via the league’s social media accounts, or by using the hashtag #CelebrateBig throughout the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.
More announcements are forthcoming.
