Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State Take Unbeaten League Mark Into Weekend

Cal State Fullerton swept UC Santa Barbara to open conference play, their first sweep of the Gauchos since 2010.

MEZA THROWS THIRD-CAREER NO-NO

Long Beach State’s Cielo Meza tossed her third-career no-hitter Saturday, as the Beach downed Hawai‘i, 8-0.  In five innings of work, Meza struck out six while walking just one.  Meza’s second no-hitter of the season helped the Beach to a series sweep versus the Rainbow Wahine.  The sophomore also tossed a no-o on March 3 when LBSU defeated No. 21 Minnesota, 1-0.  With her third in the category, as a sophomore, Meza has tied for the second-most no-hitters in Long Beach State history.  Meredith Cervenka leads the pack with four career no-nos; the Big West record stands at six, set by Carie Dever of FSU (1987-90).

LONG BEACH STATE IN THE NATIONAL POLLS
After sweeping Hawai‘i Long Beach State has won its last 10 contests.  The Beach remain at No. 18 in the USA Today/NFCA poll and jumped to No. 19, up from a week ago, in the ESPN/USA Softball poll.The Beach leads the Big West with a 29-7 overall mark and shares the top spo in the league standings with Cal State Fullerton at 3-0. 

HORVATH SETS CSUN RECORD

CSUN senior infielder Savannah Horvath set the Matador school record for career-home  runs, Saturday, with her 47th blast which ties the second-most in Big West history.  Long Beach State’s Darian Tautalafua owns the BWC mark with 53 career round-trippers (2013-16).  Horvath has 12 homers on the year to lead the league.

FULLERTON SWEEPS IN DRAMATIC FASHION
For the first time since 2010 Cal State Fullerton swept UC Santa Barbara, to open Big West play 3-0.  The Titans’ ended the first of a doubleheader Saturday with a walk-off grand slam from Julia Valenzuela, the second homerun of the season for the sophomore.  In the second of the doubleheader, Ireanna Siofele sent a three-run walkoff shot over the fence for her first homer of the season.  There was no shortge of drama with back-to-back walkoffs on WatchESPN.

ESPN3 TO FEATURE BIG WEST SOFTBALL
Initial ESPN3 coverage for softball begins Saturday, March 31 with a doubleheader at Anderson Family Field as preseason Big West favorite Cal State Fullerton welcomes in UC Santa Barbara.
   
Nationally ranked Long Beach State – No. 22 by USA Today/NFCA and No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Softball poll – hosts a Saturday, April 7 doubleheader against UC Riverside.  The Beach own a conference-best 26-7 record.  The Highlanders are second in win total with 23.
   
The Titans host their second ESPN3 doubleheader on Saturday, April 28 against upstart UC Davis, which is 18-11 this season.  Softball coverage concludes on Saturday, May 12 with a single game at CSUN’s Matador Diamond against visiting Long Beach State.
