Hawai‘i junior Irene Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain/IES Car Sant Cugat) had a role in half of her team’s goals in a big conference-opening victory, earning her Big West Women’s Water Polo Player of the Week accolades.
The attacker notched four goals and assisted on two others as UH downed No. 8 UC Irvine, 12-6, to take the early lead in the Big West standings.
Gonzalez shot 57.1 percent on the day, logging her sixth hat trick of the season. She leads the Big West with 2.57 goals, 1.64 assists and 1.71 steals per match.
She scored two goals in the first half to help stake the Rainbow Wahine to a 9-1 halftime lead over the Anteaters, and kept UCI from making a comeback with scores in the third and fourth quarters.
Gonzalez also won both of her sprints against the Anteaters.
