Hawaii Hosts Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Invite
2018 Men's Volleyball Release No. 10
Second-ranked Hawai‘i welcomes in three fellow nationally ranked opponents to the Stan Sheriff Center as No. 8 Lewis, No. 11 Penn State and No. 4 BYU participate in the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Invite this week.
Long Beach State Ties Program’s Best Start
Top-ranked Long Beach State swept No. 12 CSUN twice last week to move into a first-place tie with UC Santa Barbara at 2-0 in the Big West standings.
The Beach also improved to 16-0 overall, tying the 1992 squad for the best start in program history. LBSU, the only remaining undefeated team in Division I-II, goes for the record on Wednesday when Mount Olive visits the Walter Pyramid.
The 16-match winning streak represents the second-longest in school history, trailing only the 22 straight wins that spanned two seasons from the 1991 and 1992 clubs.
LBSU also has won 23 straight matches inside the Walter Pyramid, the second-longest home winning streak in program history.
Taking A Respite From Big West Play
All six teams have played their first two matches on the Big West schedule. LBSU swept CSUN twice and UC Santa Barbara went 2-0 against UC San Diego to become the early leaders in conference play. Hawai‘i and UC Irvine split their matchups in Honolulu a week ago to sit at 1-1, while CSUN and UC San Diego are 0-2. The next round of Big West competition begins on Thursday, March 15 when Hawai‘i visits CSUN, UC Santa Barbara travels to Long Beach State, and UC San Diego invades UC Irvine.
Easy As 1-2-3
Five Big West schools remain ranked in the Sports Imports/AVCA top 15 poll this week – and Big West members are ranked one-two-three. Long Beach State is No. 1 in the country for the eighth straight week. Hawai‘i kept its spot at No. 2 while UCI moved into the No. 3 slot. CSUN is No. 12 and UCSB is tied for No. 14 in the rankings.
