BIG WEST AT A GLANCE
Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara Tied For First
Cal State Fullerton and UC Santa Barbara are the early leaders in the Big West women’s tennis standings with identical 2-0 records. The Gauchos joined the Titans atop the race after knocking off UC Davis and UC Riverside at home last week.
The Titans are off to another fantastic start in 2018, owning an 8-2 record. This comes on the heels of the 2017 campaign in which CSF started out 11-0 en route to a school record 19 wins. CSF begins a four-match homestand on Thursday against Azusa Pacific.
The Gauchos lost their fourth straight non-conference match when they dropped a close 4-3 decision to SMU at home on Tuesday. They turn their focus to the road this week with back-to-back matches against Arizona and No. 33 Arizona State.
Two Women’s Matches On Conference Ledger
Long Beach State hosts longtime women’s tennis rival UC Irvine this Friday at the Rhodes Tennis Center. The Beach attempt to halt a three-match losing streak which includes opponents Maryland, Loyola Marymount and No. 48 USC. The UCI match kicks off a six-match homestand for LBSU. The Anteaters enter that contest on a four-match winning streak – victories coming against Idaho State, La Salle, St. Joseph’s and Lafayette.
UC Davis, 2-1 in league play, looks to remain near the top of the standings when CSUN visits on Saturday. After splitting contests against Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton, the Matador women seek to move to 2-1 in league play.
Cal Poly Men Stay In Oracle/ITA Top 50
Cal Poly’s 7-4 start to the season – continued last week with a loss to Loyola Marymount and a victory over Nevada – kept the Mustangs in the Oracle/ITA poll this week. The Mustangs dropped five spots to No. 49 in the poll. In 2017, Cal Poly ended the season ranked No. 49 in the country. Cal Poly welcomes three Bay Area programs to its home this week as Santa Clara, Saint Mary’s and UC Santa Cruz roll out the rackets.
Home Sweet Home
A number of teams are beginning long homestands. The UC Irvine men start a nine-match run of home play on Monday when Boston College comes to town. The UC Riverside women commence a string of eight consecutive contests at home beginning Saturday with Villanova. And the Hawai‘i women are currently 2-0 on a seven-match homestand. The Rainbow Wahine are idle this week, but return to action next week against Wichita State and UC Irvine. The UCR men start a stretch of nine straight home matches beginning Sunday with Southern Utah and Northern Arizona.
