Tsujimoto, Hutchison Earn February Golfer of the Month Honors

3/1/2018

Career-best performances from Brandon Tsujimoto and Samantha Hutchison earned the pair Big West Golfer of the Month recognition for February.

Tsujimoto Finishes Second at Farms Intercollegiate

Two top-10 finishes, including a career-best second place showing, netted UC Riverside senior Brandon Tsujimoto (Pomona, Calif./Damien HS) the Big West Men’s Golfer of the Month award for February.

Tsujimoto shot under par in five of six rounds for the month, including his two best round scores of the 2017-18 season.

He tied for second in a field of 76 at the Farms Intercollegiate in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.  He carded an opening round 73, then followed with consecutive rounds of 70 to finish at 3-under 213 on the 6,903-yard The Farms Golf Club course.  Tsujimoto’s second place finish was five spots higher than his previous career-best.

Tsujimoto also shot a 6-under 54-hole aggregate of 210 at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, held at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.  He posted scores of 71, 71 and 68 to tie for 10th overall among 135 participants.

On the 7,322-yard layout, he had the third-best score in the field on par 3 holes (-3).

Tsujimoto’s efforts helped the Highlanders finish fifth as a team at the Farms Intercollegiate and seventh at the Wyoming.

It is the first career honor for Tsujimoto.

Others nominated: Nick Engelhardt (Cal Poly); Martin Manalo (Cal State Fullerton); Andres Gonzalez (Long Beach State); Thomas Hutchison (UC Davis); David Kim (UC Irvine)

Hutchison Wins First Individual Title

UC Davis junior Samantha Hutchison (San Jose, Calif./Pioneer HS) earned medalist honors at a tournament for the first time as a collegian, and collected her first Big West Women’s Golfer of the Month honor.

In six rounds during February, Hutchison shot par or lower.  Until this month, Hutchison had never shot lower than 70 in any round throughout her career.  However, at the Battle at the Rock and Westbrook Invitational, she accomplished the feat three times within a 16-day period.

Hutchison achieved her first sub-70 round in the opening round of the Battle at the Rock in Riverside, Calif. She opened with a 69 before closing with rounds of 72 and 70.  Her collective 5-under 211 tied her for first in the field of 81 at Oak Quarry Golf Club.

She kept that momentum going at the Westbrook Invitational, held in Peoria, Ariz.  Tying for sixth overall, Hutchison shot even par 72 through the first 18 holes, followed by torrid rounds of 69 and 68 for a total of 7 under 209.

Hutchison helped the Aggies capture the team title at Battle of the Rock.

Others nominated: Caroline Cantlay (Cal Poly); Elsa Lundquist (Cal State Fullerton); Cara Barker (Long Beach State)
