No. 1 Long Beach State, No. 12 CSUN To Battle On WatchESPN
2018 Men's Volleyball Release No. 9
The first Big West men's volleyball match on WatchESPN takes place this Friday as top-ranked Long Beach State invades the Matadome to tangle with No. 12 CSUN.
WatchESPN To Carry Big West Showdown
After a historic opening weekend of Big West play that featured the inaugural conference clashes – UC San Diego at UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine at Hawai‘i – the league will make more history this week.
The first-ever Big West match on WatchESPN/ESPN3 will take place this week as No. 1 Long Beach State visits No. 12 CSUN in the Matadome. It is the first of a six-match package on WatchESPN, which will also carry all five Big West Tournament matches at LBSU’s Walter Pyramid April 19-21.
Big West Schedule
Each team plays a 10-match double round-robin schedule, with the exception of Hawai‘i, which will play three home doubleheaders (UC Irvine, UC San Diego, Long Beach State) and two away doubleheaders (CSUN, UC Santa Barbara) this year.
Five Big West schools remain ranked in the Sports Imports/AVCA top 15 poll this week. Long Beach State is No. 1 in the country for the seventh straight week. Hawai‘i moved up one spot to No. 2 after splitting a pair of matches with UC Irvine last week while the Anteaters climbed one spot to No. 4. CSUN at No. 12 and UC Santa Barbara at No. 15 round out the list of ranked Big West representatives.
Beach Wins Both Bouts Against Bruins
No. 1 LBSU maintained its lofty perch in the men’s volleyball world with a four-set win at then-No. 2 UCLA, marking the second time within less than a week that the Beach toppled the highly regarded Bruins. The Beach remained the nation’s only undefeated team at 14-0, and drew closer to their all-time best start to a season, which was 16-0 in 1992. They hope to sustain their success against a CSUN squad which features the No. 2 performer in kills per set (4.66) in Arvis Greene, Jr. The Matadors also rank No. 1 in the country in aces per set (2.09) and blocks per set (2.55).
Worsley, Syftestad No. 1 In NCAA Stats
Hawai‘i junior setter Joe Worsley and UC San Diego senior outside hitter Tanner Syftestad are ranked No. 1 in the country in the NCAA stats. Worsley has directed a high-powered Rainbow Warrior offense, which is ranked No. 2 in the country with a .363 hitting percentage. Worsley is averaging 10.97 assists per set. He posted his two highest assist totals of the season with 47 and 52 in back-to-back matchups with UCI last week. Syftestad has accumulated 20-plus kills in eight matches this season, including Big West single-match highs of 27 on three occasions – McKendree (1/5), Ottawa (1/27) and Concordia (2/9). He’s averaging 4.95 kills per set.
Big West Tournament On The Horizon
The first annual Big West Men’s Volleyball Tournament will be held April 19-21 at Long Beach State’s Walter Pyramid. All six teams will compete for the tourney title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
