LONG BEACH STATE APPEARS IN NATIONAL POLL
Long Beach State broke into the USA Today/NFCA national poll at No. 22. The last time a Big West representative appeared in the polls was week six of the 2017 season when Cal Poly received a No. 25 nod. Ca Poly was the only team to break into the top 25 last season. The last time LBSU received votes prior to last week was week 13 of 2016. The Beach received votes for five weeks that season.
YANEZ RANKS NATIONALLY
UC Davis freshman pitcher, Brooke Yanez, has totaled 75 strikeouts on the year to lead all competition in the Big West. The rookie’s 75 SOs are fifth-best in the nation and she leads all freshman in the category in the NCAA. Kaia Parnaby of Hawai‘i owns the Big West record for most strikeouts in a single season with 342 in 2013.
UC DAVIS UPSETS NO. 16 OKLAHOMA STATE
UC Davis delivered No. 16 Oklahoma State a 3-1 loss on day two of the Mary Nutter Vollegiate Classic -- the UCD victory over the ranked Cowgirls was the Aggies’ first win over a nationally ranked squad since May 1, 2013 when Davis defeated then-No. 17 Stanford 5-4 at home. The contest last weekend marked the fifth win over a ranked opponent.
The Aggies currently own the best active-win streak with three contests. UCD has also won seven of its last nine.
MISFELDT LEADS PACK WITH WINS
UC Riverside senior pitcher Taylor Misfeldt recorded her eighth win of the season Tuesday as the Highlanders defeated St. John’s 2-1. In the circle, the senior own an 8-2 record after allowing just a single earned run and six hits versus the Red Storm. Misfeldt’s 1.39 ERA is second-best in the Big West while her 71 strikeouts are third-most in league.
Earlier this season, Misfeldt earned her third shutout win on the year against Stanford, to break the all-time wins record at UCR -- she now has 45 wins to her name. The Big West record for wins stands at 107 set by Terry Capenter (FSU) from 1989-1992.
DOCKINS THROWS NO-NO
Cal State Fullerton freshman RHP Taylor Dockins joined the ranks of the Titan elite last week after throwing her first career no-hitter. Dockins held San Diego to an 8-0 victory Thursday, for the 57th no-hitter in program history.
Carie Dever of FSU (1987-90) owns the Big West record for most career no-hitters with six.
YOUTH SIGNAL NEW ERA
For the third-straight week, a freshman received Big West Pitcher of the Week Honors. Last season, not a single POTW award went to a freshman. The last time the league had three-straight freshman recipients was from Feb. 23-March 9 of 2015 -- Zoe Conley of CSUN earned back-to-back honors followed by Hawaii’s Brittany Hitchcock.
