Long Beach State, UC Davis Earn Repeat Softball Honors


Nichole Fry helped Long Beach State go 5-0 in Las Vegas, while Brooke Yanez continued her pitching dominance as this week’s softball award recipients.

From her leadoff position, Long Beach State junior Nichole Fry (Lake Elsinore, Calif./Santiago HS) hit .667 with six extra base hits to earn Big West Softball Field Player of the Week accolades.

➜ Fry had 12 hits in 18 at-bats – and reached base 14 times – to help the Beach finish 5-0 at the Marucci Desert Classic in Las Vegas. 

➜ Six of her 12 hits injected power into the LBSU offense as Fry finished the week with three doubles, one triple and two home runs.  Fry had an impressive slugging percentage of 1.278.

➜ Fry also scored seven runs and drove in four more as LBSU outscored its five opponents 50-13.

➜ The shortstop posted multiple hits in the final four games of the tournament, including a 4-for-4 effort in a 5-1 victory over Boise State.  She doubled and tripled against the Broncos.

➜ Fry blasted a homer in LBSU’s 5-4 win over Brigham Young and then again in the tourney finale, a 14-6 triumph over Idaho State. 

➜ She finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored in a 23-1, run-rule victory over Buffalo.  She had another 3-for-4 performance with a double and a homer in the 14-6, five-inning win against Idaho State.

UC Davis freshman Brooke Yanez (Ventura, Calif./Buena HS) secured her second straight Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week honor as she went 3-1 in four appearances at the Bulldog Classic.

➜ Yanez allowed only an unearned run in 23 innings, scattering just nine hits and striking out 27 batters.

➜ The left-hander posted complete game shutouts against Fresno State – a team receiving votes in the latest USA Today/NFCA poll – and Pacific.

➜ She threw a one-hitter against the Bulldogs with six strikeouts.

➜ Yanez struck out nine in the tournament finale against the Tigers in a three-hit shutout.

➜ Picked up a win in relief, tossing 3.0 innings of one-hit ball with four strikeouts in a 7-3 win over CSU Bakersfield.

➜ Her only loss came in a hard luck outcome against No. 23 California.  Yanez allowed four hits and an unearned run in a 1-0 setback.

➜ Yanez has not allowed a run in her last 17.1 innings pitched and has not allowed an earned run in 34.2 consecutive IP dating back to the season opener.
