BIG WEST AT A GLANCE
Three Teams Tied For First In Women’s Tennis Race
In a week where 11 of the 12 women’s tennis non-conference matches are on the road, two undefeated teams in Big West play square off in a weekend showdown.
CSUN travels to Cal State Fullerton in a battle between 1-0 conference foes. The Matadors defeated Cal Poly on Sunday while the Titans knocked off UC Riverside on Feb. 3. CSF has won four straight matches while CSUN’s win over the Mustangs was its first of the year.
UC Davis is also 1-0 in Big West play, toppling defending Big West regular season champion Hawai‘i. The Aggies are off to an impressive 6-1 start.
UC Santa Barbara is involved in the lone match against a ranked opponent, squaring off against No. 15 California.
Long Beach State, UC Irvine Head East
The Long Beach State and UC Irvine women’s tennis teams head eastward for competition this week. The Beach head to Washington, D.C. to battle George Washington before moving to neighboring College Park, Md. to face Maryland. Meanwhile, the Anteaters play three matches in three days against the likes of Saint Joseph’s, Lafayette and La Salle. LBSU is 2-2 and UCI 2-4 entering their respective roadtrips.
Hawai‘i Returns To Men’s Action
The Hawai‘i men’s tennis team has been idle for over a month – its last action coming against then-No. 24 Texas Tech on Jan. 10 - but the Rainbow Warriors will host Air Force in back-to-back contests on Saturday and Sunday.
UC Irvine is the only road team on the docket. The Anteaters play Utah and Utah State in the Beehive state. Everyone else is at home like Hawai‘i. UC Santa Barbara hosts San Francisco and Pacific, while Cal Poly also entertains the Dons. UC Davis plays three matches at the Marya Welch Tennis Center – against Sonoma State, Saint Mary’s and Santa Clara. Cal Poly (2-0), UC Davis (1-0) and UC Santa Barbara (2-0) are all undefeated at home.
Zeidan Ranked In Women’s Singles
Cal State Fullerton freshman Genevieve Zeidan is ranked No. 97 in the latest Oracle/ITA singles poll. The native of Taipei, Taiwan, boasts a 5-1 record while shuffling between the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions in the lineup. She is 3-0 in the No. 2 slot. In addition to playing CSUN at home, the Titans hit the road to play Loyola Marymount this week.
