1. UC Davis Women’s Basketball Off To 9-0 Start Season; Best Start For Big West School Since 1991-92
Junior Morgan Bertsch posted her seventh 20-point game in nine contests this season to lead a trio of Aggies in double figures, and visiting UC Davis used a suffocating defensive effort, forcing 22 turnovers and handing host Saint Mary’s a, 74-50, defeat on Saturday afternoon at McKeon Pavilion. In a battle of teams ranked among the top 15 in the nation according to the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll, the Aggies remained undefeated, improving to 9-0 on the year and winning their fourth consecutive contest on the road. 2. Four Big West Teams Placed In AVCA Preseason Poll Top 15
The Big West Conference Board of Directors today announced the addition of California State University, Bakersfield and the University of California San Diego as the 10th and 11th members of the Conference. CSU Bakersfield will become an official member of the conference on July 1, 2020, and will be immediately eligible in round-robin and single-site championship sports for Big West titles, awards and honors and continue its eligibility for NCAA automatic qualification in these sports. 3. #BigWestCares: Help Us Stuff-A-Bus!
The inaugural season of men’s volleyball draws closer as the American Volleyball Coaches Association Preseason Poll lists four Big West teams among the top 15. Long Beach State earned four first-place votes and 345 points to finish No. 2 in the AVCA poll behind top-ranked Ohio State, which garnered 19 first-place votes and 361 points. Full Story
4. UC Davis’ Moneke Named Lou Henson National Player of the Week
Chima Moneke, who earned Big West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors for his role in a 2-0 UC Davis week, received national recognition in the form of the Lou Henson National Player of the Week award as announced by CollegeInsider.com Monday. The senior forward averaged 18.0 points, 13.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks to help the Aggies knock off Northern Colorado (56-51) and Washington State (81-67) last week, as the Aggies improved to 5-2 on the season. 5. Six Big West Representatives On AVCA All-Region List
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) released its 2017 AVCA All-Region Teams today and five Big West athletes and one coach were recognized. Cal Poly’s Torrey Van Winden nabbed her second AVCA All-Pacific North Region Team, while her teammate Taylor Nelson and Hawai’i’s Emily Maglio each collected their first All-Pacific North Region Team. Mustang Adlee Van Winden was named to the AVCA All-Pacific North Region Honorable Mention Team, while her coach, Sam Crosson, earned the region’s coach of the year accolades. Representing the Big West on the AVCA All-Pacific South Region Team is UC Santa Barbara’s Lindsey Ruddins. Full Story
