12/5/2017

UC Santa Barbara is riding a five-game winning streak and has already equaled its win total from the entire 2016-17 season.

TIPOFF TIME

Gaucho Win Streak Hits Five
UC Santa Barbara owns the longest win streak in the Big West at five straight entering Tuesday’s home game against Omaha.  It is the school’s longest win streak since a nine-game run during the 2015-16 season.

The Gauchos have defeated three WCC squads – Pepperdine, San Francisco, San Diego – as well as Montana and Prairie View in building their streak.  UCSB features the Big West’s leading scorer in sophomore Max Heidegger, who is also ranked No. 8 nationally at 23.8 points per game.  Graduate transfer Leland King II is No. 3 in the conference at 18.1 points per game.

Owning the most wins (6) and best winning percentage (.750) of any Big West squad, the Gauchos already have equalled last year’s victory total.

The early success has the Gauchos positioned favorably in the NCAA RPI at No. 31 through games of Dec. 4.

Ags Look To Continue Home Court Streak
UC Davis seeks to extend a 12-game home court win streak on Wednesday when the Aggies host Pacific.  It is tied with Kentucky for the 11th-longest current home win streak in the country.  The Aggies went 11-0 on Hamilton Court last season and won their 2017-18 home opener on Nov. 29 against Northern Colorado.  UC Davis is currently the only Big West squad ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major top 25, checking in at No. 25 this week.

The Aggies also have achieved a program record for NCAA RPI ranking at No. 22.

Big West With Four Wins Against Pac-12
The Big West picked up two more victories against the Pac-12 last week.  UC Davis earned a 14-point triumph at Washington State, giving the Aggies their first win over a Pac-12 foe since Stanford in 2005.  Long Beach State took down Stanford, 76-68, at home to defeat a Pac-12 squad for the second time this season.  The Beach toppled Oregon State at the Advocare Invitational on Nov. 24.  UC Riverside also won at California on Nov. 10.

The Last Time...
The last time the Big West had at least four wins against the Pac-12 in non-conference play was the 2013-14 season.  Going back through records dating to the 1989-90 season, the Big West has never won five games against the Pac-10 or Pac-12 in one season.

Beach Bits
In defeating Oregon State and Stanford, Long Beach State has won two games against the Pac-12 (or Pac-10) in one season for the first time in school history.

Perfect At The Line
Cal Poly junior Donovan Fields is a perfect 25-for-25 from the free throw line this year.  He has made his last 33 consecutive free throws going back to the 2016-17 season as he hit his final two in a Feb. 25 game versus UC Riverside and went 6-6 against CSUN on Mar. 2.

BIG WEST COACHING

Long Beach State’s Dan Monson is the dean of Big West head coaches, in his 11th season on the sideline at the Walter Pyramid.  He ranks eighth all-time in conference history with 174 wins.  His 105 conference victories is good for seventh on the coaching leaderboard.  Only five Big West head coaches have accumulated 200 or more wins during their tenure with the conference – Bob Thomason (Pacific, 436), Jerry Tarkanian (Long Beach State & UNLV, 405), Bob Williams (UC Santa Barbara, 313), Neil McCarthy (New Mexico State, 248) and Jerry Pimm (UC Santa Barbara, 222).
