United Soccer Coaches Division I All-Far West Region Teams

The United Soccer Coaches organization announced that nine Big West representatives were selected to the All-Far West Region Team, including a trio of players on the second team.

In total, players from six Big West squads were selected, including two each from Cal State Fullerton, CSUN and UC Davis, with one apiece from Sacramento State, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara.

The nine All-Far West Region honorees represent the most for the Big West since notching 11 in 2014.

The All-Far West Region consists of schools from the Big West, Pac-12 and West Coast conferences.

Second team recipients were UC Davis junior Roy Boateng, UC Santa Barbara freshman Rodney Michael and UC Irvine senior Giovanni Godoy.

Boateng, who was joined by teammate Nabi Kibunguchy on the third team, gave the Aggies two all-region recipients for the first time since 2008.  Boateng earned Big West Defensive Player of the Year honors in helping UC Davis to its first North Division title since 2012.

Michael became the first Big West freshman since UCSB’s Ismaila Jome in 2013 to achieve all-region status.  The seventh Gaucho in the last nine seasons to claim Big West Freshman of the Year honors, Michael ranked tied for fourth in goals (8) and tied for third in points (20) among conference players.

Godoy captured Big West Offensive Player of the Year accolades after topping the league in goals (13), points (29) and shots (63).  The 13 goals are tied for No. 2 in UC Irvine single-season history, and he became the first Anteater to earn all-region plaudits since Cameron Iwasa, Michael Sperber and Eduardo Calzada in 2014.

In addition to Kibunguchy, five other players claimed a spot on the all-region third team – Sacramento State senior Paul Geyer, CSUN seniors Emmanuel Usen Jr. and Darion Mealing, and Cal State Fullerton juniors Samuel Goni and Ross McPhie.

Geyer is the first Hornet to be named all-region since the school joined the Big West in men’s soccer in 2012.

CSUN has had at least one all-region representative in each of the last six years.  Usen Jr. ranked second in the Big West with 11 goals while Mealing was the centerpiece of a Matador defense that posted the second-best goals against average (1.29) in the conference.

Goni and McPhie played critical roles in helping the Titans win their third Big West Tournament title in four years.  Goni scored nine goals to rank No. 3 in the Big West, while McPhie’s seven scores tied him for sixth.
