Big West Women's Basketball Weekly Release No. 4

UC Davis, owners of a league-best 6-0 start, look to continue their hot streak with a #CausewayCup battle against rival Sacramento State looming. The Aggies are the lone remaining unbeaten team in the league and can finish the first month of the season undefeated with a win over the Hornets.

AROUND THE BIG WEST

FAST START
UC Davis picked up a couple more wins last week, pushing its record to a league-best 6-0 mark. The start is the best for the Aggies in their DI history and is one win away from matching the best start for the program since the 1993-94 team began the season 7-0.

BIG DAY FOR MORGAN
UC Davis junior Morgan Bertsch had a memorable day in the Aggie win over Seattle last week. The forward recorded her fifth straight 20-point game with a game-high 25, pushing her past current UCD assistant coach Des Abeyta on the school’s all-time scoring list. Bertsch also record four blocks in the victory, making her just the fifth player in school history to reach the century mark in career blocked shots.

YOUR TURN, MY TURN, ANYONE ELSE?
A rebuilt UC Irvine squad has shared the offensive load and court time as 12 players have appeared in at least five games this season. Eight players are averaging between 5.0 points and 9.0 points and nine players are averaging between 13.7 minutes and 29.3 minutes. In addition, six different ‘Eaters have led the team in scoring in their seven games.

AN IMPROVEMENT IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT
The one weakness to CSUN center Channon Fluker’s game has been her free throw shooting but the junior is making opponents pay for doubting her ability this year. Fluker has hit 23-of-27 from the charity stripe so far this year, converting at an 85.2% clip which is fourth-best in the Big West. Over her previous two seasons, Fluker had converted 157-of-267 from the line, a 58.8% conversion rate.

SISTER SISTER
Cal Poly seniors Dynn and Lynn Leaupepe were cashing in on the charity stripe in the win over San Francisco. Dynn went 4-for-4, while Lynn one upped her twin sister with a 10-for-10 effort. Lynn’s effort is the most makes without a miss in the league this season.

NEW COACH, SAME DEFENSE
Long Beach State has a new head coach in Jeff Cammon, but the Beach is still playing its brand of hard nosed defense. LBSU leads the Big West in steals per game (12.0) and turnovers forced per game (22.0). Those numbers also rank 23rd and 30th in the NCAA respectively.

PASS FIRST POINT GUARDS
The Big West has two of the leading assist makers in the nation in Hawai’i’s Tia Kanoa and UC Davis’ Kourtney Eaton. Kanoa is seventh in the NCAA in assists (50) and 15th in assists per game (7.1), while Eaton is 29th in the country in assists (37) and 31st in assists per game (6.2).

GRAND STATUS 2017-18 EDITION
UC Davis junior Morgan Bertsch and Fluker became the 138th and 139th members of the Big West 1,000-point this season, as both crossed the milestone in the first two weeks of the campaign.

Several players around the league are also approaching the 1,000-point milestone. UC Riverside’s Michelle Curry (915), UC Davis’ Pele Gianotti (895), Cal Poly’s Lynn Leaupepe (860), UC Davis’ Rachel Nagel (804), CSUN’s Serafina Maulupe (802), Hawai’i’s Sarah Toeaina (800) and UC Davis’ Dani Nafekh (689) all have a chance to add the accomplishment this season.
