First-Timer And A Regular Earn Final Women's Volleyball Honors

11/27/2017

Makayla Wolfe of UC Irvine and Mahalia White of UC Davis secured the final spots on the weekly women’s volleyball honor roll for the 2017 season.

Wolfe Delivers Big Effort In Regular Season Finale

Putting forth a career night in UC Irvine’s regular season finale, UC Irvine middle blocker Makayla Wolfe earned the dual awards of Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week.

Wolfe notched a team and career-high 16 kills in a four-set win over UC Santa Barbara.  She also tallied a match and season-best seven blocks as the Anteaters improved to 22-7 overall, the program’s most wins since 2009 when that squad also registered 22 wins.

A first-time honoree for both awards, Wolfe swung at a .536 clip as her 16 kills came on just one error in 28 attempts.  She chipped in two digs for good measure.

UCI, which finished third in the Big West, the highest finish for the club since 2009, advanced to the postseason for the first time since 2004.  The Anteaters will open up the NIVC on Tuesday against Sacramento State.

Others nominated (Player of the Week):
Fabiana Rosas (UC Riverside); Charlie Robinson (UC Santa Barbara)

Others nominated (Defensive Player of the Week): Fabiana Rosas (UC Riverside); Emilia Petrachi (UC Santa Barbara)

White Tops Off 2017 Campaign With Sixth Award

UC Davis outside hitter Mahalia White (Canoga Park, Calif./Chatsworth Charter HS) culminated an impressive inaugural collegiate season with her sixth Big West Women’s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week honor.

The six awards, which all have come in the last eight weeks, occurred this time thanks to White’s 20 kills and seven digs against Mountain West Conference champion Colorado State in Saturday’s season finale.

It was White’s sixth match of 20-plus kills this season, the most ever by a UC Davis freshman and tied for sixth in school history.

She also had an ace and a block against the nation’s No. 23-ranked opponent.

Others nominated: Nicole Rodriguez (UC Riverside)
