Women's Hoops Ready To Join The Feast
Big West Women's Basketball Weekly Release No. 3
After indulging in your favorite Thanksgiving meals and traditions, leave room for Big West women's basketball as six tournaments dot the landscape this week.
Three of those tournaments will be in home arenas as Cal Poly has the ShareSLO Holiday Beach Classic, CSUN hosts the Warner Center Marriott Thanksgiving Classic and Hawai'i welcomes holiday travelers for the Rainbow Wahine Showdown.
AROUND THE BIG WEST
CSUN’s Channon Fluker, the reigning Big West Player of the Year, was off to a slow start but broke out in a big way in the Big Easy. The junior had her best game of the young season on the road against New Orleans, recording 32 points and 20 rebounds in the narrow loss. Fluker came into the game having scored 21 points and pulling down 14 rebounds in her two previous games. She also went over 1,000 points for her career, making her the 11th player in program history to achieve the milestone.
UC Davis has gotten off to a 4-0 start for the second straight season, the first time in its DI history that the club has back-to-back 4-0 starts to a campaign. The Aggies best start to a season as a Division I member is 5-0, occuring in both 2007-08 and 2011-12.
Locked in a tight game with Portland last week, UC Irvine turned to freshman Dani Guglielmo and the young player delivered. Guglielmo hit four three-pointers in as many attempts in the second period, helping to turn the tide against the Pilots. In all, the first-year player hit five threes in nine attempts in the victory, the first points of her collegiate career.
STUFFING THE STAT SHEET
UC Riverside’s Skyler Lewis powered the Highlanders to an impressive win over Fresno State with a stat stuffer of a line. The sophomore put up career highs in points (20) and rebounds (15), while also recording a season high three blocks. The last time a UCR player had a 20-point, 15-rebound effort was February 11, 2017 when Réjane Vérin had 20 points and 16 rebounds against CSUN.
CARVING UP THE PAINT
UC Santa Barbara’s Drew Edelman has been a force for the Gauchos in the early part of the season. Edelman is averaging 21.0 points and 10.7 rebounds while shooting 50.0% from the field and 92.9% from the free throw line. Edelman has surpassed the 20-point barrier in two of her three contests and pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds in the matchup last week against Seattle.
Cal State Fullerton has shown an uptick in its offensive output this season thanks to improved shooting. The Titans are shooting 38.4% from the floor and 37.3% from three-point land, improving on the 36.2% shooting and 28.5% showing from downtown a year ago. CSF is also scoring 65.3 points per game this season after finishing last year at 56.0 points per contest.
GRAND STATUS 2017-18 EDITION
UC Davis junior Morgan Bertsch and Fluker became the 138th and 139th members of the Big West 1,000-point this season, as both crossed the milestone in the first two weeks of the campaign.
Several players around the league are also approaching the 1,000-point milestone. UC Riverside’s Michelle Curry (913), Cal Poly’s Lynn Leaupepe (830), UC Davis’ Rachel Nagel (774), Hawai’i’s Sarah Toeaina (766) and UCD’s Dani Nafekh (679) all have a chance to add the accomplishment this season.
