FIRST ROUND – GAUCHOS VS. HIGHLANDERS

UC Santa Barbara won the Sept. 30 matchup, 3-1, taking a season-high 25 shots and utilizing goals from Alex Liua, Noah Billingsley and Rodney Michael to overcome an early 1-0 deficit.  That was one of only three games this season in which the Gauchos scored multiple goals.  They were held to one goal or less seven times in conference play.  UC Riverside earned 10 points in its final five games (3-1-1) to leapfrog UC Irvine for the final tourney spot.  The Highlanders overcame an 0-10 start, including three straight losses to start league play.  All four of their wins have come when they have scored two goals.

FIRST ROUND – MATADORS VS. HORNETS
Sacramento State defeated CSUN, 1-0, in the Big West opener for both teams on Sept. 28.  The two teams took only 14 shots combined and the Hornets scored in the 52nd minute on a Matt Carnefix goal via a free kick from Justin Bedig.  Sacramento State exploded for a season-high five goals against Cal Poly on Oct. 21 but since the outburst has gone scoreless in its last two games.  CSUN also comes in having lost two straight, but is 3-1-1 all-time at Matador Soccer Field in Big West Tournament games.  This is a rematch of last year’s semifinals at CSUN.  The two teams went 110 minutes without a goal, but CSUN won 6-5 in penalty kicks en route to the title game.

THROW INS

• Since moving to divisional play in 2012, the South Division No. 1 seed has won the Big West Tournament championship four times (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016).  The outlier was 2014 when South No. 3 seed Cal State Fullerton captured the title after playing three straight games on the road.

• A North Division team has never won the tournament title.  In fact, a North Division team has reached the championship game just twice since 2012 – UC Davis in 2012 and UC Santa Barbara in 2015.  From 2008-11 – the first four years of the tournament – UC Irvine and UCSB won all four titles when the conference played within a single division.

• UC Riverside is the only winless team in Big West Tournament history (0-4-0).

• A CSUN triumph would give the program 10 wins for the first time since 2013.

• UC Santa Barbara has the longest active streak of consecutive 10-win seasons at 16.  The Gauchos need to win three straight conference tourney games and an NCAA Tournament game to keep that streak alive.

• During the regular season, the North Division finished with an 8-5-3 record against the South Division after two weeks of interdivisional play.  The North is now 50-34-12 all-time versus the South since divisional play began in 2012.
