Gauchos Off To 2-0 Start
UC Santa Barbara is the lone remaining undefeated Big West team after week one of conference play. The Gauchos won convincingly at home against Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside to enter this week’s action at 2-0.
It is the sixth straight year that UCSB has emerged unbeaten after week one. The Gauchos went 1-0-1 in 2012 and 2016, and 2-0 from 2013-15.
UCSB, the preseason pick to win the North Division, travels to South Division favorite CSUN on Thursday. The Gauchos then move further south to take on UC Irvine Saturday. UCSB is 5-0-1 in its last six conference openers, and own a 28-5-9 record against league competition during that span.
Sacramento State Unbeaten In League Play
Sacramento State earned a win over CSUN and a tie against UC Irvine to finish week one of conference play at 1-0-1. The Hornets haven’t picked up points in their first two Big West games since 2012 – the year they joined the league – when they started out 4-0. Sacramento State looks to continue its momentum on the road against UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton this week. UCR is 0-9 and has lost 15 straight games dating back to last year.
UC Davis Off To Good Start
UC Davis opened its Big West schedule unbeaten for the first time since starting 2-0 in 2014. The Aggies shutout UC Irvine and battled to a tie against CSUN to forge a 1-0-1 record last week. Leading 1-0 against the Matadors, UC Davis was 15 seconds from full time and improving to 2-0 in the Big West, but conceded a goal to Nicholas Grinde with time winding down. The Aggies face Cal State Fullerton on the road this week. CSF has won the last four regular season meetings at Titan Stadium, and the Aggies last won there in 2008.
Titans In The Friendly Confines
Cal State Fullerton is unbeaten in its last four home Big West matches (2-0-2) entering this week’s home conference opener against UC Davis. The Titans also face Sacramento State, and have never lost to the Hornets on the home pitch in five previous tries.
Godoy, Canales Top One-Two Punch
The UC Irvine duo of Giovanni Godoy and Ivan Canales has combined to score 11 of the team’s conference-high 20 goals this season. Godoy is No. 1 in the Big West with six goals while Canales is tied for second with five. The Anteaters are unbeaten (5-0-1) when Godoy scores a goal.
UC Santa Barbara has won three straight meetings against CSUN at Matador Field, and each time the game went into overtime. The last trip, in 2015, ended with UCSB winning in the first overtime. The 2011 and 2013 visits featured a golden goal in double overtime.
UC Irvine is tied No. 12 nationally with 62 points (20G, 22A).
• After a 2-0 start to league play, UC Santa Barbara is tied for the seventh longest current active winning streak in the NCAA at four in a row.
