George Martinez and Mikayla Flores of Long Beach State are the weekly cross country honorees following their performances at the UNLV Invitational.
Martinez Finishes Sixth at UNLV Invitational
Long Beach State senior George Martinez (National City, Calif./Sweetwater HS) placed sixth at the UNLV Invitational for Big West Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week accolades.
Martinez posted a 6K time of 19:09 to lead all Beach runners. It was his second top-10 finish this season and he was the team’s top placer for the third time this season.
LBSU finished in second place on the Craig Ranch Regional Park course with 47 points.

Florez Runs Personal Best at UNLV Invitational
Long Beach State junior Mikayla Florez (Riverbank, Calif./Riverbank HS) captured her second Big West Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week award this season after turning in a personal-best time at the UNLV Invitational.
She traversed the 5K course in 17:49, trimming 23 seconds off her previous top mark. Florez finished in third place among 66 runners, finishing nine seconds behind the second place individual.
It represented her second top-3 finish of the season. The Beach placed second among five teams with 73 points. LBSU fared better than UNLV, USC and San Diego State. Florez has been LBSU’s top runner in all three races this year.
