McCaskill, Palacios Selected As Candidates For Senior CLASS Award
Senior standouts Jovani McCaskill of CSUN and UC Irvine’s Kiana Palacios were selected as candidates for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award in Division I collegiate soccer as announced Friday.
Selected from a nationwide pool for the distinction, McCaskill and Palacios are among 30 women nominees who excel in the areas of community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the award honors the student athlete who most embodies the four characteristics.
McCaskill, the 2016 Goalkeeper of the Year, helped her squad set team and individual marks for shutouts in a single-season in both the CSUN and Big West record books with 14 clean sheets during her junior campaign. The Matador led the conference in shutouts, save percentage (.908), goals against average (0.37), goals against (8) and minutes played (1922). Now in her senior season, McCaskill boasts a .800 save percentage with a 0.99 GAA and 9 goals against to pace CSUN. With 24 career shutouts, McCaskill is just four clean sheets away from setting a new pogram record.

As a junior, the forward led UCI with nine goals, four game-winners, 23 points, 50 shots and 25 on target. Palacios also briefly led the nation in goals and points before leaving to play for the Mexican National team a season ago. The Second Team All-West Region honoree also added five assists in 2016 and has been awarded Big West Offensive Player of the Week earlier this season for her efforts versus Penn and Toledo.
