Madden, Hinkle Deliver Top Performances at UC Riverside Invitational

9/19/2017

Thomas Madden of UC Davis and Jenna Hinkle of UC Santa Barbara parlayed top-five finishes at the UC Riverside Invitational into their selections as Big West Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week, respectively.

Madden Makes Successful UC Davis Debut

UC Davis graduate transfer Thomas Madden (Front Royal, Va./Virginia) earned Big West Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors after a fifth-place finish at the UC Riverside Invitational in his school debut.

A transfer from the University of Virginia, Madden donned the Aggie blue and gold for the first time  and placed fifth among 100 Division I runners in the men’s 8,000 meter invitational run.  He crossed the line in 24:09.0, leading UC Davis to a seventh place team finish.

The closest Big West competitor to Madden was Aggie teammate Jordy Ceja, who came in 13th with a time of 24:40.4.  Madden was just five and a half seconds behind the second place finisher.

Others nominated: Samuel Pimentel (Cal State Fullerton); Hector Garcia (UC Irvine); Patrick Bourke (UC Santa Barbara)

Hinkle Finishes First Among Collegians at UC Riverside Invitational

UC Santa Barbara senior Jenna Hinkle (Cottonwood, Calif./West Valley HS) captured the Big West Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week award with a sub-20 minute performance in the 6K at the UC Riverside Invitational.

It marked the first time in Hinkle’s career that she ran the 6K in under 20 minutes, posting a time of 19:59.8.  That effort was good for second overall, and first among collegians.  Kristen Findley of Big Bear Track Club won in 19:56.1.

Hinkle’s previous personal best in the 6K came at last year’s Santa Clara Bronco Invitational in 20:10.1.

Hinkle improved upon her previous time on the UC Riverside Agricultural Operations Course by 35 seconds.  Among Gauchos all-time, she trailed only Amanda Babineaux, who ran 19:57.0 at the conference meet over seven years ago.

Others nominated: Wendi Leos (Cal State Fullerton); Faith Makau (UC Riverside); Sienna Santiago (Hawai‘i)
