UC Irvine Enters Week Three WIth Perfect Mark

Big West Women's Volleyball Release - Week 3

Big West Faces Top 25:
After falling to No. 8 Washington last week, Cal Poly has two more chances to notch a Top 25 win this week at the Nike Classic in Eugene, Ore.  The Mustangs are schedule to tackle both No. 14 Oregon and No. 23 Wichita State.  Also battling a ranked opponent this week are the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara, who will face No. 19 USC in their first home tournament of the year, the UCSB Thunderdome Classic.

Around The Big West:
UC Riverside is pacing the Big West Conference in assists (14.80 APS), kills (15.40 KPS) and digs (19.55 DPS), while Cal Poly tops the ranks in hitting percentage with a .306 clip.  Led by Skyler Williams  (1.45) and Emily Maglio (1.43), who sit second and third in the league, Hawai’i paces the conference in blocks with a 3.20 average. UC Irvine owns a league-high 1.76 service ace average.

UC Irvine Remains Perfect In 2017:
The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team continued its perfect start to the season as it captured the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic team title after downing Kennesaw State, Saint Louis and Illinois State. The Anteaters’ 6-0 record to open the year surpasses the 2013 squad which kicked off the season with five straight wins before dropping its first contest.  UC Irvine carries its undefeated mark to Las Vegas this week for the UNLV Challenge where it is slated to face Louisville, Weber State and UNLV.

UCR, CP Off To Great Starts:
Cal Poly and UC Riverside are both sporting 5-1 records after the first two weeks of play. This marks the best start for the Mustangs since the 2006 season where they won the Big West Conference Championship. Cal Poly’s only loss was to No. 8 Washington last week at the Washington/Seattle Tournament. The Highlanders are also showcasing their best start in over a decade as 2005 was the last time they had similar success to open the season.

Aggies Open Home:
UC Davis opens the home portion of its schedule this week when it hosts local foe Sacramento State in the Causeway Classic Tuesday evening.  The Aggies follow that up with UC Davis Invitational where they are set to entertain Portland State, Boise State and Santa Clara in the three-day tournament.

Sister Power:
The Van Winden sisters, Adlee, who is a junior, and Torrey, a sophomore transfer, are leading the Mustangs at the net as they pace the team and sit second and third din the Big West with kill averages of 4.72 and 4. 50. Both have already earned Big West Player of the Weeks nods with Adlee earning the first of the season and Torrey collecting this week’s selection. Torrey also sits in the conference’s top 10  in hitting percentage (6th - .352) , while Adlee ranks third in service aces (.44 APS).

New Head Coaches:
The 2017 women’s volleyball season will be missing two legendary coaches at the helm of their respective programs as Hawai’i’s Dave Shoji and Long Beach State’s Brian Gimmillaro both retired in the offseason.  Between the two, there was 74 years of coaching experience as Shoji led the Rainbow Wahine for 42 years and Gimmillaro guided the Beach for 32. To put that into perspective, the combined head coaching experience in the Big West between all nine current women’s volleyball coaches is 28 with CSUN’s Jeff Stork leading the pack with 14 years at the helm.

Hawai’i Tabbed To Claim 2017 Title:
The University of Hawai’i was selected to capture its third straight Big West Conference women’s volleyball championship, and fifth out of the past six years, after claiming six first-place votes en route to a 78 point total as part of the Big West women’s volleyball preseason coaches poll as voted on by the nine head coaches.  The Mustangs of Cal Poly, nabbing two first place votes and 71 total points, earned the second slot in the preseason poll.  Securing the third place spot with one first place vote and a total of 65 point was Long Beach State. The Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara sit fourth with 47 points and is followed by UC Irvine after registering 41 points.  UC Davis nabbed the sixth slot after collecting 39 points and is followed by CSUN, who holds the seventh spot with 33 points. UC Riverside locked-in the eighth position after grabbing 19 points and Cal State Fullerton rounds out the nine-team field  with 10 points.
