Van Winden, Sato, Ushakova Earn Women's Volleyball Honors


Recipients of the week two women’s volleyball awards came from Cal Poly, CSUN and UC Riverside.

Van Winden Solid At Washington/Seattle Tournament

Cal Poly sophomore Torrey Van Winden (Napa, Calif./Vintage HS) averaged 5.56 kills per set in a 2-1 performance to capture Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week honors.

The sophomore outside hitter hit a robust .349 with 50 kills over the three matches.  Cal Poly swept Seattle and Santa Clara, while providing a strong showing against No. 8 Washington in a 25-20, 28-26, 25-17 loss.

Van Winden also averaged 2.44 digs and 0.67 blocks per set.

She hit a sizzling .583 with 16 kills against Seattle, adding four digs and two aces.  Van Winden posted 15 kills, nine digs and three blocks against Santa Clara.

In the tournament finale, Van Winden notched a season-high 19 kills against the nationally ranked Huskies.  She hit .351 for the match.  She nearly had a double-double for the second straight match with nine digs.

Sato Named To All-Tournament Team

Senior Katie Sato (Calabasas, Calif./Agoura HS) helped CSUN win all three matches at the Pepperdine-CSUN Challenge with a stellar effort from the back row, earning Big West Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Sato claimed a place on the All-Tournament Team after leading all defensive players with 52 digs over the three contests. 

She averaged 5.20 digs per set as the Matadors defeated Weber State (3-0), Pepperdine (3-1) and Northeastern (3-0). 

Sato compiled a season-high 26 digs against the Waves.  She had 18 scoops against Weber State and eight more versus Northeastern.  In addition, she tallied three aces and five assists for the week.

Ushakova Helps Highlanders Tie Best Six-Match Start

UC Riverside middle blocker Yuliya Ushakova (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma HS) helped her team to a 3-0 mark to garner Big West Women’s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week honors.

Ushakova hit .349 with 19 kills and just four errors in 43 attempts as the Highlanders knocked off Chicago State, San Jose State and Howard at the Fullerton-UC Riverside Classic.

The three wins upped UC Riverside’s record to 5-1, tying the program record for best six-game start in the school’s Division I history.  She had eight kills against Chicago State, seven versus San Jose State and four against Howard.

Ushakova added 10 blocks in the three wins, and is tied for ninth in the conference in blocks per set.  Her .366 hitting percentage ranks No. 5 in the Big West.
