UC Davis senior Rianna Goins set a personal record in the 800-meter final to earn first-team All-America status and highlight the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Goins finished in a time of two minutes, 3.86 seconds, the second-fastest 800 time in Aggie history. She eclipsed her previous best of 2:05.42 set two weeks ago at the NCAA West Preliminary meet. Only Lauren Wallace, who ran 2:02.91 at the 2013 national meet, has posted a faster time in the UC Davis record book.
Four Big West athletes captured second-team All-American honors Saturday at Hayward Field.
CSUN senior Monique Griffiths came in 16th place in the women’s discus with a top throw of 174-11. She earned second-team All-American kudos by virtue of placing between 9th and 16th. Griffiths also claimed All-America honors in the hammer on Thursday when she finished 11th with a distance of 207-06.
Cal Poly sophomore Peyton Bilo finished in 10th place in the women’s 5,000 meters to cement her second team All-American selection. Bilo ran a time of 15:52.82, just 2.18 seconds from breaking the school record and 3.78 seconds from erasing the Big West record of 15:49.05 held by Alycia Cridebring of UC Davis since 2013. Bilo is the first Big West All-American in the 5,000 since UC Santa Barbara’s Danielle Domenichelli in 2008.
Long Beach State senior Riley Cooks and UC Santa Barbara senior Tori Usgaard posted 15th and 16th place finishes, respectively, to highlight Big West action in the heptathlon. Usgaard moved up two spots from 18th place through four events, as she placed sixth in the 800 meters (2:17.60), 11th in the long jump (19-01.25) and 17th in the javelin (108-05). Usgaard collected 5,245 points.
Cooks scored 5,256 points in her second consecutive appearance at nationals. The Coarsegold, Calif., native was 10th through day one. She had a seventh place showing in the javelin with a top throw of 131-07. Cooks also came in 14th in the long jump (18-07.00) and 18th in the 800 meters (2:40.89).
UC Davis sophomore Erinn Beattie notched honorable mention All-American accolades for her efforts in the women’s high jump. Beattie cleared five feet, eight inches to tie for 18th place overall.
Overall, the 16 Big West athletes who made it to Eugene corralled a total of one first-team All-America honor, 12 second-team honors and five honorable mentions. Griffiths and CSUN senior Lexis Lambert earned multiple All-America awards.
