Big West Baseball Release - Week 16
The Division I Baseball Committee announced the 64-team field for the 2017 NCAA Baseball Championship and the Big West Conference received two selections - Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton.
Long Beach State (37-17-1), who learned yesterday that it was one of 16 teams to host a Regional site, a first since 2008, found out who it will entertain this weekend. Joining Long Beach State at Blair Field June 2- June 5 are No. 2-seeded Texas (37-22), No. 3 seed UCLA (30-25) and fourth-seeded San Diego State (41-19).
The Dirtbags open the Regional against the Aztecs Friday at 8:00 pm on ESPN2, while the Longhorns and Bruins battle in the first of game of the doubleheader at 4:00 pm. Long Beach State was 0-2 against both San Diego State and UCLA this season in Tuesday night meetings, and did not face Texas. The last time the Dirtbags and Longhorns played was back in 2007 for a three-game series at Blair Field. The victor of the Long Beach State Regional advances to the Super Regional where it will face the Stanford Regional Champion, which features Big West foe Cal State Fullerton.
This marks the third NCAA Regional appearance in four seasons for the Dirtbags, after LBSU went to the Gainesville Regional in 2014 and the Coral Gables Regional in 2016. Long Beach State earned the Big West Conference’s automatic qualifier into the NCAA Baseball Championship after claiming its first Big West championship since 2008 with a 20-4 mark. It’s the first time the Beach has won 20 conference games in a season since 1998, and the Dirtbags won the conference title by an impressive four games over Cal Poly.
The Titans (34-21) are making their 26th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, 39th overall, after receiving an at-large selection into the NCAA Baseball Championship. Cal State Fullerton now owns the second-longest active streak in the nation behind Florida State (40 years) since Miami failed to make the postseason this season, snapping a 44-year streak.
Cal State Fullerton received the second seed in the Stanford Regional and is slated to battle third-seeded BYU (37-19) Thursday, June 1 at 1:00 pm on ESPN3. The host Cardinal (40-14) entertains Sacramento State (32-27) in the second game of the doubleheader (6:00 pm). The Titans own a 7-5 advantage over BYU in the all-time series. Fullerton also holds a 16-6 advantage over Sacramento State and but trails the series with Stanford 43-56. The winner of the Stanford Regional advances to the Super Regionals where it will face the Long Beach State Regional victor.
While 15 of the regional sites are scheduled to be played Friday through Monday, June 2-5, competition at the Stanford Regional will begin Thursday, June 1 and will conclude either Sunday or Monday, June 4 or 5. BYU, which won the automatic qualifier by capturing the West Coast Conference tournament championship, does not participate in any athletics competition on Sundays. Therefore, if the Cougars advance to the regional final, that game will take place June 5; otherwise that regional championship game is scheduled for Sunday, June 4.
Selection of the eight super regional hosts will be announced on www.NCAA.com/cws, Tuesday, June 6 at approximately 8 a.m. (ET). The 71st Men’s College World Series begins play Saturday, June 17, at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska.
