UCSB Sits 11th; UCI's Kim Tied For 3rd After Day One Of Regionals

Making its first appearance in the postseason since 1999, the UC Santa Barbara golf team struggled to a 16-over par 296 in the first round at the NCAA Stanford Regional and enters the second round in 11th-place out of 13 teams.
The Gauchos, who won their first Big West Conference championship since 1998, had all five of their players shoot over par on the par-70 Stanford Golf Course. Junior Zach Smith and sophomore Nick Swanson each shot a 3-over par 73 and are tied for 41st-place through 18 holes to lead UCSB. Freshman Brett Bennett carded a 4-over 74 and is tied for 48th. Junior Will Moffly shot a 6-over par 76 and is tied for 62nd while junior Brandon Bauman finished at 77, 7-over par.
The Big West also had three student-athletes playing as individuals at the NCAA Stanford Regional - Felix Mory of CSUN, who claimed individual medalist honors at the 2017 Big West Conference Men’s Golf Championship, David Kim of UC Irvine and Andres Gonzalez of Long Beach State.
Kim, the 2017 Big West Conference Player of the Year, got off to an impressive start in the NCAA Regional Monday, firing a 3-under par 67 in the first round and is tied for third after the opening round. Brad Dalke of Oklahoma and Maverick McNealy from Stanford are tied for the lead at 5-under 65 while Kim is one of four players who shot 67. Kim’s round included three birdies and one eagle.
Mory, playing in his first NCAA Regional, fired a two-over 72 in first round action to tie for 34th.
Gonzalez shot a five-over 75 in Monday’s opening round of the NCAA Stanford Regional, tying for 53rd place at Stanford Golf Course.
The other five 54-hole regional tournaments sites are University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas, Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash., Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind., University Club in Baton Rouge, La., and The Grove in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Thirteen teams and ten individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Northern Illinois University is the host institution for the 2017 championships.
