Bush, Mullins Earn Baseball Weekly Honors

Austin Bush whacked four homers to extend his conference lead, while Justin Mullins contributed to a four-hit shutout as the duo received the baseball weekly awards.

Bush Powers Gaucho Offense With Four Homers

UC Santa Barbara junior Austin Bush (Turlock, Calif./Turlock HS) notched his second career Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week award after an impressive power display.

The first baseman had four homers and a double among his six hits in a 1-3 week for the Gauchos.  Bush drove in seven of the 18 runs the team scored over the four games.

Bush’s four homers extended his Big West lead to 14.  He now ranks sixth in UCSB single-season history for homers, and eighth on the career list (28).  He is UCSB’s single-season and career leader in home runs in the BBCOR era.

He slugged homers in three consecutive games, beginning with Tuesday’s non-conference matinee at Saint Mary’s.  His solo homer in the fifth inning put the Gauchos up 4-3, as he matched his career-high of 11 set last year.

Bush uncorked a towering two-run shot over the center field fence to give UCSB a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the conference opener against Cal State Fullerton Friday.  He wasn’t done, as he drilled two more homers in Saturday’s 6-3 victory that evened the series at one apiece.  Bush gave the Gauchos a 2-0 lead with a fifth-inning two-run jack over the right field netting, and provided a pair of insurance runs in the ninth with an opposite field bomb.  Bush finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs.

For the week, he batted .400 (6-for-15) with four runs and seven RBIs.  He had a 1.267 slugging percentage.

Others nominated: Scott Hurst (Cal State Fullerton); Nolan Bumstead (CSUN); Lucas Tancas (Long Beach State); Ryan Anderson (UC Davis); Mark Contreras (UC Riverside); Adam Fogel (Hawai‘i)

Mullins Combines On Four-Hit Shutout

UC Davis senior Justin Mullins (Napa, Calif./Vintage HS) combined on a four-hit shutout of UC Riverside to secure his first career Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week award.

The right-hander tossed 8.1 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits against the Highlanders before leaving after a walk with one out in the ninth.  He struck out a season-high six batters in the 2-0 victory.  That tied his highest strikeout total since sitting down the same number in a win over Sacramento State on May 10, 2016.

It was the longest outing and finest performance of the season for Mullins, who earned the fourth Pitcher of the Week award by an Aggie this season, joining Orlando Razo (Feb. 27 and Apr. 17) and Robert Garcia (May 8).  He held UC Riverside to .148 hitting in the game, and retired 11 consecutive hitters at one point.

Others nominated:  Spencer Howard (Cal Poly); Connor Seabold (Cal State Fullerton); Samuel Myers (CSUN); Dave Smith (Long Beach State); Calvin Faucher (UC Irvine); Brendan Hornung (Hawai‘i)
