Hurst, Garcia Named Big West's Best In Baseball

Scott Hurst and Robert Garcia contributed heavily to a pair of conference road series victories in being selected to the Big West baseball weekly honor roll.

Hurst Sparks Titan Offense From Leadoff Spot

Cal State Fullerton junior Scott Hurst (Glendora, Calif./Bishop Amat HS) notched Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week honors after sparking the Titans to a series win at Hawai‘i on .583 hitting.

The center fielder had an efficient week from the leadoff spot, posting a .643 on-base percentage, including reaching base 10 of the first 11 times at the plate to begin the series.  He had seven hits in 12 at-bats.

Hurst went 4-for-4 with a double and triple to lead the Titans to a 3-1 victory in the series opener.  He scored a pair of runs, including the game-winner in the fifth and added an insurance RBI single in the seventh.  He also walked and stole a base.

He posted his second straight multi-hit game in Saturday’s 4-1 loss, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk.

In Sunday’s rubber game, Hurst had a 1-for-5 performance with a run scored as the Titans won 6-2, cementing their ninth series victory of the year.

Others nominated: Nolan Bumstead (CSUN); Ryan Anderson (UC Davis); Michael Farris (UC Riverside); Johnny Weeks (Hawai‘i)

Garcia Handcuffs Gaucho Offense In Shutout Effort

UC Davis sophomore Robert Garcia (Manteca, Calif./Modesto Christian HS) tossed a three-hit shutout against conference foe UC Santa Barbara to capture Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week accolades.

The southpaw struck out a career-high 11 batters and issued no walks in the 2-0 victory.  Garcia picked up his second win of the year in his longest stint of the season.

Garcia fanned at least one batter in eight of his nine innings, including 10 on swinging strikes.  He retired 16 consecutive batters at one juncture.  The Gauchos managed only a second-inning double, and singles in the third and eighth innings as they failed to score a run in a game for just the third time all season.

Garcia bested his previous career-high of nine strikeouts set on two other occasions – against Air Force on Mar. 24, 2016 and versus Utah Valley State on Feb. 24 of this year.
