There is a three-way tie atop the leaderboard at the 2017 Big West Conference Men’s Golf Championship after the first round of play at the Sandpiper Golf Course (par 72, 7,087 yards) in Goleta, Calif. Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State all fired 6-under 282 to claim the top spot.
CSUN carded a 4-under 284 to grab the fourth slot and UC Riverside is four strokes back in fifth with an even-par 288. UC Irvine and UC Davis are knotted in sixth place after carding 4-over 292. Cal State Fullerton (300) sits eighth and Hawai’i rounds out the nine-team field with a team score of 301.
The final score of the day resulted as the low-round as CSUN’s Felix Mory carded a four-under 68 to pace the 45-player field. There is a three-way tie for second between Cal Poly’s Jimmy Castles and Cole Nygren and UC Santa Barbara’s Nick Swanson blasted a 3-under 69. Five players are log-jammed in fifth with a 2-under 70.
Round two of the three-day event tees off at 11:30 a.m. with Hawai’i, UC Riverside, CSUN. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com and admission to the event is free.
The six NCAA regional sites are Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif., University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas, Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash., Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind., University Club in Baton Rouge, La., and The Grove in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Competition at all six sites will be held May 15-17.
The 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship is slated for May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
