Cal State Fullerton Ekes Out Marathon Victory Over CSUN

It took over three hours for No. 4 Cal State Fullerton to prevail in a hard fought 4-3 contest against No. 5 CSUN to close out quarterfinal play of the Big West Women's Tennis Tournament on Friday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The Titans lost the doubles point for only the second time all year – but also the second consecutive match.  CSF dropped matches at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to reach a 1-0 deficit.

Camille DeLeon evened the scoreline at 1-1 with her 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles against Elisa Elhadj, but the Matadors responded for the 2-1 lead as Kristen Poei knocked off Danielle Pham, 6-4, 6-4.

Sarah Nuno tied the score again at 2-2, winning by a break in each set to topple Kiryang Kim, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 4.  Back-and-forth the pendulum swing as CSUN retook the lead for a third time, going up 3-2 after Skyla Alcon's comeback 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 3 versus Karla Portalatin.

But the Titans dug in to win their program single-season record 19th match.  Alexis Valenzuela won at the top of the lineup in a battle against Mickey Hsu, eventually prevailing 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.  The match came down to No. 5 singles where Masako Makiba held on for the 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 triumph over Emma Roenholt.  Makiba had led 5-2 in the third set before Roenholt closed the gap, but could not come back completely.

CSF takes on No. 1 seed Hawai‘i in the semifinals at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.  The Matadors end their season at 9-12.
