Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara will host the 2017 #BWCGolf Men's Championship

Big West Conference Men's Golf Championship Release

The Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara, Calif., is set to host  the 2017 Big West Conference Men’s Golf Championship May 1-3.  The men’s championship is a three-day, 54-hole tournament with 18 holes played each day.

First round of the day, on Monday May 1, tees off with UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly and Long Beach State at 11:00 am.  Admission is free.

Last year, the UC Riverside Highlanders claimed their first men’s title since 2005 after leading second place Cal Poly by three strokes.  UC Riverside entered the final round of play with a six-stroke lead and never let up as the Highlanders went on to capture the 2016 Big West Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif., after carding a three-day score of 2-under 862.

The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos enter the event as the top seed, having won four tournaments this season, including the final two of the regular season. They are led by Zach Smith and Brandon Bauman, who are sporting strokes averages of 71.9 and 72.0.  Back on April 11, Smith secured his first career tournament victory at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Chandler, Ariz.  He shot a 10-under-par 206 at the Whirlwind Golf Club.

Cal Poly received the No. 2 seed in the championship and claimed one team title this year along with three other Top 3 finishes. Cole Nygren paces the Mustangs with a 72.2 stroke average and is followed by Justin De Los Santos with a 72.3 mark.

The six NCAA regional sites are Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif., University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas, Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash., Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind., University Club in Baton Rouge, La., and The Grove in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Competition at all six sites will be held May 15-17.

The 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship is slated for May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.

Cal Poly Wins First-Ever Big West Women’s Golf Championship:
Cal Poly held off a roaring UC Riverside team, who tied a tournament low score of 289, to claim its first-ever Big West Women’s Golf Championship at the Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside, Calif.  The Mustangs carded 300 in the final round for a three-day total of 887 to capture both the team title and the conference’s automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament.  This marks the second time this year the Mustangs captured a team title on this course, having won the Battle at the Rock back in February.

The Highlanders, who won their first team championship last year, finished one stroke back in second place. Hawai’i shot its best round of the tournament today at 292 to finish in third place with a 893 team total.  UC Davis finished fourth at 894 and Cal State Fullerton was fifth after firing 898.  Long Beach State (899) sits sixth and is followed by UC Irvine (905) and CSUN (916).

On the Individual side, Cal State Fullerton’s Martina Edberg claimed her second Big West Conference Championship medalist honor after  firing 1-under 71 today for a 54-hole score of 6-under 210.  The Glumslov, Sweden, native, also won the individual title as a freshman back in 2014.

Cal Poly, Three Individuals Selected To NCAA Women’s Golf Regional:
The Cal Poly women’s golf team, who two days ago claimed its first-ever Big West Conference Women’s Golf Championship, is bound for the Albuquerque, New Mexico, for its first NCAA regional appearance. Joining the Mustangs in the Albuquerque Regional are Cal State Fullerton’s Martina Edberg, who won her sixth individual medalist honor of the year at the Big West Conference Women’s Golf Championship and UC Davis’ Paige Lee.

Also making the postseason as an individual is UC Riverside’s Jakeishya Le, who finished one stroke back in second place at the conference championship to mark her third-straight top-five finish of the season. Le is slated to participate in the Lubbock Regional at the Rawls Course.
