AROUND THE BIG WEST

RIVALRY RENEWED
The top softball rivalry in the Big West will be renewed this weekend as league-leading Cal State Fullerton heads to second place Long Beach State in a crucial three-game set. The Titans lead the all-time series 61-75, but the Beach has claimed the series eight times in head coach Kim Sowder’s 10-year tenure. The final game of the series gets national treatment as it will be televised live on ESPNU at 3:00 pm PT.

AND HERE’S BRITTANY
Hawai’i pitcher Brittany Hitchcock has been mowing down the opposition in conference play. The junior has a 1.70 ERA, 36 strikeouts, seven complete games in as many starts and has walked only six in 45.1 innings of work. Hitchcock has allowed more than two runs in only two of her seven starts against league foes and has walked just one batter in her last four starts over 26.1 innings.

GLOVER GETS TO 90
Last weekend CSUN senior Taylor Glover stole two bases, giving her 90 for her career. That figure is second all-time and leaves Glover just 10 steals shy of becoming the second player in league history to steal 100 career bags.

HYLAND CHOSEN IN NPF DRAFT
Cal Poly senior pitcher Sierra Hyland became the first Big West draftee in the National Pro Fastpitch draft in eight years Monday, going fourth overall to the two-time defending champion Chicago Bandits.

Hyland is the second Big West player drafted into the NPF in conference history, joining fellow Mustang Melissa Pura who was drafted in the fourth round (17th overall) in 2009. Hyland is also the second-highest draftee in any sport in Cal Poly athletics history.

GAUCHO TURNAROUND
UC Santa Barbara struggled against a tought slate early in the season, going 4-10 in February. The Gauchos have found their footing as they are 23-11 in a little under two months since then. UCSB just picked up a big road series win last weekend against Long Beach State and heads to Hawai’i in another tough road battle this weekend.

MISFELDT CONTINUES RECENT FORM
UC Riverside pitcher Tayler Misfeldt has been lights out over the last month. Since March 25 the junior has an ERA of 1.11, while over her last five appearances she has allowed just one earned run, two walks and struck out 14 over 21.0 innings.

HYLAND NAMED FINALIST FOR PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Cal Poly senior pitcher Sierra Hyland was named among the 25 finalists for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year honor. Prior to the start of post-season play, the list will be narrowed to the Top 10 Finalists on May 10. The Top 3 Finalists will be announced May 24, while the winner of the 2017 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be revealed on May 30 prior to the start of the NCAA WCWS in Oklahoma City.
