BIG WEST AT A GLANCE
UC IRVINE IN SEVENTH-HEAVEN
After a 6-3 victory over Long Beach State Thursday, UC Irvine claimed its seventh Big West regular season title and finished league play undefeated at 5-0. This marks the fourth time in conference history that the ’Eaters have finished league play unbeaten and they’re the only program to have accomplished the feat (2011, 2012, 2014). The Anteaters look to earn their sixth Big West Tournament title and the automatic berth to the NCAAs. UCI’s last tourney crown came in 2014.
Last year, UC Santa Barbara made history, claiming its first-ever Big West Tornament title after defeating 2015 tourney champ, Hawai‘i, in the final showdown. The Big West has had a different Tournament champion the last three years in the Gauchos (2016), the Rainbow Wahine (2015), and the ’Eaters. Those are the only three programs to ever lay claim to the cup. CSUN, Long Beach State and UC Davis look to follow in UCSB’s footsteps and claim their first-ever tourney title.
