Helping her team erase a four-goal deficit, CSUN junior Madeleine Sanchez (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) guided the Matadors to their first conference victory and earned Big West Women’s Water Polo Player of the Week.
The Matadors came back to defeat No. 14 UC Santa Barbara, 9-8, largely due to monstrous performance by Sanchez. She netted a season-high six goals as the Matadors snapped a seven-game skid as well as a nine-game losing streak in Big West play.
Sanchez netted goals in each half including two in the fourth quarter. She also chipped in two assists as she accounted for eight of the team’s nine total goals. The Matadors defeated their highest-ranked opponent this season heading into the Big West Tournament.
Sanchez has scored 66 goals this season, including 15 in conference play. She also has compiled 35 assists and 92 steals on the year.
Others nominated: Eirini Patras (Long Beach State); Greta Kohlmoos (UC Davis); Cambria Shockley (UC Irvine); Kate Pipkin (UC Santa Barbara)
