McKenna Key To Series Victory Over No. 8 Cal State Fullerton
Cal Poly sophomore Alex McKenna (Canyon Country, Calif./Alemany HS) earned Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week accolades after sparking the offense in a series victory over No. 8 Cal State Fullerton.
McKenna had seven hits in 11 at-bats over the final two games of the series to key 13-6 and 8-4 victories over the Titans. He collected three hits and three RBIs in Saturday’s win while scoring a pair of runs. The center fielder tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single, and later delivered a two-run triple to key a six-run uprising in the third inning.
McKenna registered his second career four-hit game in Sunday’s triumph, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. He led off the Cal Poly home half in the first by smacking his fourth home run of the season, and added a run-scoring double in the second to help boost the Mustang advantage to 6-1.
In Tuesday’s 10-2 non-conference win at CSU Bakersfield, McKenna led off the game with his third homer of the season, and finished 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. His four extra-base hits facilitated a .900 slugging percentage for the week.
Overall, McKenna hit .450 (9-for-20) in the four games. He added three stolen bases against the Titans, giving him 10 on the year and tying him for fourth in the Big West.
McKenna has multiple hits in 10 of his last 13 games and six three-hit games over the last three weeks. He is hitting .402 (45-for-112) over Cal Poly’s last 25 games to raise his average 104 points since Mar. 11.

McCaughan Tosses Second Career Shutout
Long Beach State junior Darren McCaughan (Downey, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) captured his third career Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week honor after hurling a complete-game shutout in a road victory over UC Irvine.
It was McCaughan’s second consecutive complete game – and third of the season – and the first shutout for a Dirtbag since McCaughan blanked San Jose State on May 14, 2016. The Dirtbags also recorded their eighth shutout win of the season, which tied them for the nation’s lead with Oregon State and Louisiana-Lafayette.
McCaughan allowed just three hits, walked none and struck out five in the 4-0 victory against the Anteaters. He allowed only one UCI player to move into scoring position.
The right-hander, who is holding opponents to a .186 batting average this season, has not walked a batter in four consecutive starts spanning 33.1 innings. McCaughan’s season strikeout-to-walk ratio is 66-to-8.
