Desiree Gillaspy and Jamie Binns each fired a 1-under 71 in the first round of the 2016 Big West Conference Women’s Golf Championship at the Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside, Calif., to lift the Cal Poly Mustangs to a team total of 289 (+1) to lead the eight-team field. The Mustangs, looking for their first team title in program history, won a golf tournament on this course back in February - Battle at The Rock.
Defending champion and host UC Riverside is in second place with a score of 296 and is followed by UC Davis in third after shooting 298. Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine are knotted in fourth with a first day total of 302 , while Hawai’i sits sixth after carding 303. CSUN (305) holds the seventh slot and Long Beach State rounds out the eight-team field with a 311 total.
The 2016 Big West Conference Co-Freshman of the Year, Jakeishya Le, blasted a 2-under-par 70 to pace the 40-player field. A quartet of players - UC Davis’ Paige Lee, Cal State Fullerton’s Martina Edberg and Cal Poly’s GIllaspy and Binns - are tied for second with a 1-under 71.
Round two of the three-day event tees off at 7:30 a.m. with CSUN and Long Beach State. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com and admission to the event is free.
The winning team advances to the NCAA Division I women’s regionals which are held at four sites this year from May 5-7. The four NCAA regionals will be held May 8-10 at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M., Ironwood Golf and Country Club in Greenville, N.C., The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas, and Scarlet Course at Ohio State Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio.
The 2017 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship is scheduled for May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
