Big West Golf Release - Women's Big West Championship
Big West Women’s Golf Championship On The Horizon:
The 2017 Big West Conference Women’s Golf Championship is upon us as the Oak Quarry Golf Course in Riverside, Calif., is slated to host the event from April 23-25. The conference championship is a three-day, 54-hole tournament with 18 holes played each day on the par 72, 6,141-yard course.
First round of day one is slated to tee off with Cal Poly and UC Davis at 7:30 a.m. Admission is free.
Host UC Riverside enters the tournament as the defending champion after capturing the teams first-ever title back in 2016. At last year’s championship the Highlanders entered the final round three-strokes back in second place, but fired a blistering, third-round score of 296, a tournament low, to overtake Cal Poly to claim the 2016 Big West Women’s Golf Championship team title at The Bay Course in Kapalua, Hawai’i. The Highlanders’ efforts earned the program its first-ever women’s golf conference title while dethroning UC Davis, who won the previous six championships, in the process.
Keep an eye out on UC Irvine, who has finished top-five in five tournaments this season, and is coming off a team title at the Wyoming Cowgirl Invitational. The Anteaters placed three players in the top 10 to help secure the program’s 17th tournament win in program history and the first since the Anteaters won the Fresno State Lexus Classic at the Copper River Country Club on Feb. 24, 2009.
The Mustangs of Cal Poly are also coming of a first place victory at their final event of the regular season, the Bobcat Desert Invitaitonal. This marked the third team title of the season for the Mustangs, who were also victorious at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic, to kick off the 2016-17 season, and Battle of the Rock at the Oak Quarry Golf Club, which featured seven Big West opponents and is the location for this year’s Big West Women’s Golf Champinship.
UC Davis may not of captured any Top 3 finishes this season but don’t count them out at making a run for the title. The Aggies enter the championship as the top seed and have won six of the last seven team titles. They are led by senior Paige Lee, who sits third in the league with a 73.8 stroke average.
Fullerton’s Edberg Captured Five Titles During The 2016-17:
Senior Martina Edberg ended the 2016-17 regular season capturing her fifth medalist honor of the season at the El-Tigre Golf Country Club. Over the course of the year, she posted top-three finishes in eight of the Titans’ nine tournaments. The Glumslov, Sweden, native currently paces the Big West Conference with a 71.5 and is currently ranked 36th according to GolfWeek.
Looking Ahead At the Men’s Big West Golf Championship:
The Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara, Calif., will play host to the 2017 Big West Conference Men’s Golf Championship May 1-3. Like the women’s event, the men’s championship is a three-day, 54-hole tournament with 18 holes played each day. Admission is free.
Last year, the UC Riverside Highlanders claimed their first men’s title since 2005 after leading second place Cal Poly by three strokes. UC Riverside entered the final round of play with a six-stroke lead and never let up as the Highlanders went on to capture the 2016 Big West Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif., after carding a three-day score of 2-under 862.
