Cohen, Razo Tabbed For Weekly Baseball Honors

Sam Cohen wielded the power for UC Santa Barbara and Orlando Razo stifled the opposition’s bats for UC Davis as both individuals were honored for their performances.

Cohen Homers Twice In Series Win

UC Santa Barbara sophomore Sam Cohen (Coto de Caza, Calif./Junipero Serra Catholic HS) led the offense in a conference series victory over UC Irvine, notching Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week accolades.

The designated hitter batted .500 (6-for-12) with hits in all three games against UCI.  He scored four runs and had six RBI thanks in large part to a triple and a pair of home runs.  Cohen registered a 1.167 slugging percentage for the series.  He also played a role in 10 of UCSB’s 26 runs scored against the Anteaters.

Cohen got the series started off in impressive fashion as he drove in four runs in the 11-3 win.  He hit the first pitch he saw in the fourth inning for a two-run homer to right-center, his fifth of the year, to give the Gauchos a 3-1 lead.  Cohen finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.

He knocked in another run on an RBI triple in Saturday’s 8-7 loss.

In Sunday’s rubber game, Cohen contributed heavily to the 8-7 win.  Trailing 7-3 going into the home half of the eighth, Cohen led off with his sixth roundtripper of the year to spark the Gaucho dugout.  Then, with the score 7-6 in favor of UCI heading into the ninth, Cohen laced a one-out single up the middle to start a UCSB walk-off rally, which continued with an RBI double, wild pitch and game-ending sacrifice fly.

Cohen is tied for No. 2 in the Big West with his six home runs this year.

Others nominated: Alex McKenna (Cal Poly); Scott Hurst (Cal State Fullerton); Dylan Alexander (CSUN); Laine Huffman (Long Beach State); Keston Hiura (UC Irvine); Colby Schultz (UC Riverside); Alex Fitchett (Hawai‘i)

Razo Deals Complete Game Shutout

UC Davis junior Orlando Razo (San Mateo, Calif./Serra HS) threw a two-hit complete-game shutout against conference foe Cal Poly to collect Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors.

The southpaw dominated Mustang hitters, striking out 10 and retiring 15 consecutive before allowing his first hit.  He carried a no-hitter into the sixth – and the only two hits he gave up were singles – one of those an infield hit to Nick Meyer in the ninth.

Razo fanned at least one batter in eight of the nine innings, and stranded six Cal Poly base runners for the game, including three in scoring position.

He recorded the program’s first complete-game shutout since Harry Stanwyck scattered seven hits and struck out four in a 2-0 win at Pacific on May 10, 2013.  His 10 strikeouts marked the second time this season he reached double-digits, second-only to the career-high 13 Utah Valley batters he punched out on Feb. 25.

Razo (4-2) earned his team-best fourth victory of the year.

Others nominated: Michael Clark (Cal Poly); John Gavin (Cal State Fullerton); Andrew Weston (CSUN); John Sheaks (Long Beach State); Ryan Lillie (UC Riverside); Ben Brecht (UC Santa Barbara); Brendan Hornung (Hawai‘i)
