UC Santa Barbara Win Streak Reaches Seven
Big West Tennis Release No. 14
UC Santa Barbara can inch closer to a second straight Big West men's tennis regular season title, but first must beat UC Irvine and UC Riverside this weekend. The Gauchos are currently riding a seven-match win streak.
BIG WEST AT A GLANCE
Hawai‘i Women Wrap Up Tourney No. 1 Seed
Hawai‘i will be the No. 1 seed on the women’s side for the 2017 Big West Tennis Tournament at Indian Wells Tennis Garden, which takes place Apr. 27-30 in Indian Wells, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine clinched the top seed with Tuesday’s win at UC Irvine. UH improved to 7-0 in league play, and earned at least a share of the regular season title. The Rainbow Wahine can earn the outright regular season title with a win at Cal State Fullerton on Apr. 23, the final day of the regular season.
Two schools could tie Hawai‘i for the regular season crown should the Rainbow Wahine stumble against the Titans. Long Beach State (5-1) and UC Santa Barbara (4-1) only have one conference loss. The two squads play each other on Saturday in Long Beach. Prior to that match, the Beach hosts Cal Poly while the Gauchos travel to UC Riverside on Friday. Assuming both squads win those matches, the winner of Saturday’s LBSU-UCSB showdown, at minimum, would apply some pressure on UH.
This is UH’s first Big West title – either shared or outright – since rejoining the league for the 2013 season. The ‘Bows also competed in the PCAA/Big West from 1985-96 – a period when round robin play did not exist – and had a high finish of fourth place in the Big West Tournament.
UC Santa Barbara Men Control Own Destiny
UC Santa Barbara is positioned well to claim its second straight Big West men’s tennis regular season championship. The Gauchos are the only unbeaten team in conference play at 2-0, with matches remaining at UC Irvine (Apr. 15), home against UC Riverside (Apr. 16) and home versus Cal Poly (Apr. 22). UCSB takes a current seven-match win streak into the Highlander contest. The Gauchos have won eight straight regular season contests against Big West opponents dating back to Apr. 11, 2015.
Cal Poly and UC Davis are both 2-1 in Big West play. The Aggies have a head-to-head win over Cal Poly, but lost at home to UCSB last week. UC Riverside plays all five of its conference matches over a 12-day stretch, beginning Wednesday at home against UC Irvine.
In The Rankings
Hawai‘i freshman Petra Melounova rocketed 22 spots up the Intercollegiate Tennis Association women’s singles rankings to No. 56 this week. She enjoyed a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win against UNLV’s No. 39-ranked Carol Yang last week. Other ranked singles players include UC Santa Barbara’s Jaimee Gilbertson at No. 123, while Cal Poly senior Ben Donovan represents the men at No. 102 in the poll. Two men’s squads – No. 45 Cal Poly and No. 48 UC Santa Barbara – have been recognized by the ITA. And five women’s plus two men’s doubles teams are ranked, led by the UCSB duo of Simon Freund and Morgan Mays at No. 23.
