Titans Sweep Golfer of the Month Honors

4/6/2017

Jack Ireland and Martina Edberg gave Cal State Fullerton the clean sweep of the Big West Golfer of the Month awards for March thanks to a combined four top-10 finishes.

Ireland Records Two Top-Five Finishes

Cal State Fullerton sophomore Jack Ireland (Mission Viejo, Calif./Tesoro HS) compiled his first career Big West Men’s Golfer of the Month award as he recorded two top-5 finishes at March tournaments.

He shot par or better in five of six rounds to help the Titans finish second at the Sacramento State Invitational and third at the Jackrabbit Invitational.

Ireland posted a 54-hole total of even par 216 on the par-72, 7,010-yard Valley Hi Country Club course to begin the month.  He was consistent throughout, carding scores of 71, 72 and 73 to finish fourth among 69 golfers.  Ireland aided the Titans in climbing from third to second place on the final day of the Sacramento State Invitational.

At the Las Vegas-based Jackrabbit Invitational, Ireland collected three straight rounds in the 60’s as he carded a 12-under 204, tying for second overall and finishing just one shot behind medalist Justin Kim (203, -13) of UNLV.

Ireland again played a consistent tournament with scores of 68, 67 and 69 on the par-72, 6,843-yard course at the Siena Golf Club.  Ireland led the Titans to a third-place showing among the 12-team field.

Others nominated: Joe Fryer (Long Beach State); Evan Knight (UC Davis); David Kim (UC Irvine); Brandon Bauman (UC Santa Barbara)

Edberg Sets Big West Record With Fourth Straight Award

Cal State Fullerton senior Martina Edberg (Glumskov, Sweden/Klippans Gymnasieskola) became the first individual in conference history to win four straight Big West Women’s Golfer of the Month awards in one season as she was tabbed the winner for March.

Two other golfers – Long Beach State’s Kay Hoey and Demi Runas of UC Davis – also won four consecutive awards, but over a period of two seasons.

It is Edberg’s sixth career honor, tying her for second all-time in Big West history with UC Irvine’s Selanee’ Henderson and Runas.

Edberg began the month by recording her fourth victory of the season at the Fresno State Classic.  She shot a 4-under 212 on the 6,119-yard, par-72 San Joaquin Country Club layout.  Edberg fired rounds of 71, 69 and 72 to hold off UC Riverside’s Jakeishya Le for tournament medalist honors.

At the Sacramento State Invitational, which was shortened by a round due to weather, she led the Titans with a seventh place finish in a 76-player field.  Edberg carded a 5-over 149 over 36 holes, posting rounds of 74 and 75 on the par-72, 6,133-yard Sierra View Country Club course.

Overall this season, Edberg has posted a top-3 finish in eight of nine tournaments Fullerton has played, including five medalist finishes.  She currently leads the Titans with a 71.54 scoring average in 26 rounds played this season.

Others nominated: Jamie Binns (Cal Poly); Haley Tygret (Long Beach State); Paige Lee (UC Davis); Jakeishya Le (UC Riverside)
