Hawaii Seeks To Remain Unbeaten In Conference Play

Hawai‘i takes its 5-0 Big West record into a women's tennis showdown against UC Santa Barbara on Thursday.


Slew Of Women’s Conference Matches On Tap
Five women’s tennis conference contests are on the remainder of this week’s schedule as the teams head down the home stretch toward next month’s Big West Tournament in Indian Wells.  League leader Hawai‘i is 5-0 in Big West play after defeating Cal Poly on Tuesday.  The Rainbow Wahine face one of their most formidable obstacles to the regular season crown in UC Santa Barbara on Thursday.  The Gauchos have played just one conference match to date, but seven of their final eight contests are against Big West foes.

Cal State Fullerton takes its 13-1 record – the best start in program history – into battle against a 13-5 UC Davis squad on Thursday.  The Titans suffered their only blemish to three-time defending regular season champion Long Beach State, a 4-3 nailbiter on Mar. 10.  CSF, 2-1 in conference play, completes a six-match homestand next Tuesday against Azusa Pacific.

UC Davis plays three Big West road matches in a span of four days, beginning with the Titans.  The Aggies then clash with CSUN on Friday and UC Irvine on Sunday.  They have won seven of their last nine matches.

UCSB faces a second straight league opponent when it travels to CSUN on Sunday.

Long Beach State Takes Aim Against Ranked Foe
Long Beach State finishes off a six-match homestand against Brown on Thursday.  The Beach knocked off their first ranked opponent of the season on Sunday, toppling No. 46 Denver.  After taking on the Bears, LBSU looks to upend another ranked foe as No. 14 Pepperdine awaits in Malibu on Friday.

Cal Poly Men Move Up One Spot In Poll
The Cal Poly men extended their winning streak to seven straight after a 7-0 sweep of Big West foe Hawai‘i on Tuesday.  The Mustangs moved up one spot to No. 42 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.  Cal Poly has one more non-conference match at San Francisco on Friday, before traveling to UC Davis on Sunday in the first of four straight Big West contests to end the regular season.

In addition to the Cal Poly men’s team ranking, Big West individuals are ranked in singles and doubles by the ITA.  Cal Poly teammates Ben Donovan and Corey Pang are ranked No. 84 and No. 122 in singles, respectively.  On the women’s side, UC Santa Barbara’s Jaimee Gilbertson is No. 107.  In doubles, the UC Santa Barbara men’s pairing of Simon Freund and Morgan Mays sits at No. 9 in the country.  Pang and Donovan represent the Mustangs as the 41st-ranked duo.  In women’s doubles, UCSB boasts three ranked tandems – Palina Dubavets and Melissa Baker at No. 46, Dubavets and Stefani Stojic at No. 63, and Melissa Baker and Stephanie Yamada at No. 76.
