Award Recipients Tally Event Wins, Top 10 Marks

The track and field weekly award recipients from four different schools notched meet victories as well as top 10 program marks.

UC Irvine sophomore Isaiah Jewett (Inglewood, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) earned his second consecutive Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honor as he compiled two top-three finishes at the UCI Spring Break Collegiate Classic.  He posted his second individual victory in as many weeks he won the 800-meters in a personal-best time of 1:49.14.  He topped his previous best by 5.24 seconds, and now ranks first in the Big West, second in the West Region and fifth in the NCAA.  That time also ranks fifth-best in school history.  Jewett ran the final leg of the 4x400 relay in a 46.3 split to help his team to a third-place finish in 3:11.75, which leads the Big West by over three seconds.  Jewett now sits atop the conference leaderboards in the 400-meters, 800-meters and 4x400.

UC Davis freshman Kierra Davis (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) hit two school top 10 marks at the UNLV Invitational, leading to Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week accolades.  The sprinter posted a PR of 11.86 in the 100-meters, good for fourth place, and also tied her fourth in the Aggie record book for that event.  She is just the eighth Aggie to break the 12-second barrier with a wind-legal mark.  Davis followed that with a second-place 23.84 in the 200-meters, putting her in third in school history and making her just the fourth woman to eclipse the 24-second milestone.  She ranks fourth and third in the Big West standings in the 100 and 200, respectively.

A mammoth throw in the hammer netted Long Beach State senior Robert Marlow (Ventura, Calif./Ventura HS) the Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week award.  Marlow won the USC Trojan Invite for the second year in a row, besting competition from the host Trojans, Washington, Washington State, BYU and Cal State Fullerton.  His toss of 219-07 (66.94m) obliterated his previous lifetime-best by more than four feet.  It also placed him No. 3 on the all-time list at Long Beach State, while ranking him No. 1 in the Big West and No. 2 nationally.  He leads his nearest conference competitior by nearly 12 feet.  Marlow also competed in the shot put and discus, finishing with marks of 48-11 (14.91m) and 146-05 (44.64m), respectively.

UC Riverside sophomore Tayler Fleming (Perris, Calif./Martin Luther King HS) captured first-place in the long jump at the UC Irvine Spring Break Collegiate Classic for her second career Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honor.  Her winning mark of 19-08.25 registered as the top distance in the Big West this season by nearly six inches, and also landed her fifth in the West Region and 12th in the NCAA.  Fleming also posted a time of 14.28 in the 100-meter hurdles that placed her fourth in the event.
