Tancas, Gavin Notch Baseball Weekly Awards

Lucas Tancas helped lead Long Beach State to a 4-0 record, while John Gavin used a career-high strikeout total to collect this week’s baseball accolades.

Tancas Hits .467 In Four Victories

Junior Lucas Tancas (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Irvine Valley College) was instrumental at the plate in Long Beach State’s four victories, including one over No. 3 TCU, earning Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week honors.

The left fielder batted .467 with seven hits in 15 at-bats as the Beach won non-conference matches against No. 3 TCU, Washington State, Pepperdine and Grand Canyon.  He scored six runs and drove in a pair to go along with two walks, finishing the week with a .556 on-base percentage and .733 slugging percentage.

Tancas contributed to the 7-0 win over the highly ranked Horned Frogs thanks to hitting the first two triples of his career, scoring twice and plating a run.

He had a hit in each win – 8-7 over the Cougars and 2-1 against the Waves – saving his best for the week’s finale versus Grand Canyon.

In that game, Tancas went 3-for-5 with a career-high three runs scored and an RBI.  The three hits was also a career-best.  Tancas is now on a five-game hitting streak.

Others nominated: Colby Barrick (Cal Poly); Taylor Bryant (Cal State Fullerton); Alex Guenette (UC Irvine); AJ Sawyer (UC Riverside); Armani Smith (UC Santa Barbara); Kekai Rios (Hawai‘i)

Gavin Posts Career-High Strikeout Total In Eight Inning Gem

Cal State Fullerton southpaw John Gavin (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis HS) scattered just two hits over eight scoreless innings against New Mexico to earn Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week accolades.

Gavin struck out a career-high 14 batters to earn the victory in a 1-0 pitcher’s duel.  He tallied the most strikeouts by a Titan since Thomas Eshelman also fanned 14 against Arizona State on May 30, 2015.

He retired 16 straight Lobos to end his day, helping the Titans to stretch their winning streak to seven straight.

Others nominated: Spencer Howard (Cal Poly); Tei Vanderford (CSUN); Darren McCaughan (Long Beach State); Alex Fagalde (UC Riverside); Brendan Hornung (Hawai‘i)
