2017 Track and Field Release No. 2

A majority of Big West track and field teams are participating in California-based meets this week.

California Meets Fill This Week’s Track & Field Schedule: A majority of Big West track and field teams are in action this week.  Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State make the short trek to the USC Trojan Invite.  UC Davis and Hawai‘i head to Sacramento to compete in the Hornet Invitational.  Meanwhile, two Big West schools are hosting meets.  CSUN welcomes competitors to its Multi-Events challenge as well as the Northridge Invitational.  UC Irvine entertains UC Riverside and a host of other schools at the UCI Spring Collegiate Classic.

Long Beach State Cleans Up At Ben Brown Invitational: Long Beach State had a successful Ben Brown Invitational with two event winners and 18 top-10 finishes on Saturday alone.  The Beach won both high jump events as Vincent Calhoun paced the men’s squad and Bria Palmer led the women.  On Friday, Big West Co-Field Athlete of the Week De’Ondra Young placed second in the hammer with a personal-record throw of 198-08.50.

Cal State Fullerton Breaks Records: Cal State Fullerton turned in some excellent performances at its own Ben Brown Invitational as two school records were broken.  Junior Trevor Gorwin, the Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, established a school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 199-10.  On the women’s side, sophomore Kelsey McKelvey bettered her own record in the javelin with a toss of 139-10.

Hawai‘i Heads Off The Mainland: After opening the outdoor season with a home meet last week, Hawai‘i is sending a full complement of athletes to the mainland to participate in the Hornet Invitational.  UH’s has 21 athletes competing in the school’s first visit to the meet since 2008.

UC Irvine Hosts Collegiate Classic: UC Irvine is taking on Division I programs Army, Loyola Marymount, Northern Arizona, Pepperdine, UC Riverside and Utah State this weekend in the UCI Spring Break Collegiate Classic.  Sophomore Isaiah Jewett, the reigning Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, is first in the NCAA in the 400 meters with a personal-best 47.38.  Senior Lloyd Sicard, the two-time defending Big West champion in the 110m hurdles, added the 100 meters to his repertoire in his last outing with the 10th-fastest time in school history at 10.65.  On the women’s side, sophomore Barbara Coward looks to improve on her school record mark in the discus after going for 180-08 at the Ben Brown Invitational last week.

Big West Track & Field Championship Comes To Cal State Fullerton: Cal State Fullerton will host the Big West Track and Field Championships for the first time since 1999.  The Titan Track Complex will be home to the multi-events portion of the meet (May 5-6) and the full portion (May 12-13).
