BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara Men Nationally Ranked
Central Coast rivals Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara are ranked in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association men’s team rankings.  Winners of five straight, the Mustangs have been tabbed No. 47 nationally this week.  The winning streak includes victories over Pacific, Utah State, Middle Tennessee, Arizona and Denver.  Cal Poly looks to keep the momentum rolling as it continues a six-match roadtrip on Sunday at Fresno State.  UC Santa Barbara broke into the top 50 this week thanks to strong play against one of the tougher non-conference schedules.  The Gauchos have come tantalizingly close to springing upsets on some of the giants of the college tennis, falling 4-3 to the likes of No. 6 California, No. 21 Oregon and No. 9 Baylor.  UCSB continues a seven-match homestand against Gonzaga on Wednesday.

Long Beach State Outlasts Titans In Thriller
The showdown lived up to its billing as a matchup between two of the contenders for this year’s Big West women’s tennis regular season title.  Long Beach State, the three-time defending regular season champion, winners of nine of 11 either shared or outright titles since 2006.  The opponent – Cal State Fullerton – undefeated at 11-0 for the program’s best start and longest win streak in school history.  The Beach prevailed, 4-3, the match coming down to No. 4 singles where Lena Pacholski overcame a first set loss to defeat Sarah Nuno, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-3.  The Titans lost their 23rd straight match to the Beach, dating back to 2000, but showcased their contender candidacy.  Meanwhile, LBSU has won four straight heading into home matches this week against UT Arlington and Yale.

UC Davis Home Court Streak Snapped
UC Davis finished in third place in the second annual Golden State Invitational last week.  The Aggies won their opening match against Saint Mary’s to extend their win streak at the Marya Welch Tennis Center to 21 straight.  They had not lost at home since the spring of 2014.  That is, until the semifinals against Portland.  The Aggies dropped a tough 4-3 decision as the streak was snapped.  However, UC Davis recovered in the third place match to blank Sacramento State.

Razakasoa Wins 100th Career Singles Match
With a 6-3, 6-0 win over Georgetown’s Victorie Saperstein on Mar. 7, Long Beach State senior Maeva Razakasoa earned her 100th career singles win, and became the new all-time leader in the process.  She won two more matches during the week, and is now at 102.

UC Riverside Knocks Off Trio Of Teams In One Week
UC Riverside defeated South Dakota State, Villanova and Valparaiso in succession last week to string together its first three-match win streak since the 2011 season.  The Highlanders conclude a five-match homestand against Southern Utah Friday.

Highlander Men Emerging Too
The UC Riverside men have overcome a 1-7 start to win six of its last eight contests.
