Records Broken By Track And Field Award Winners

The five recipients of this week’s Big West Track and Field Athlete of the Week awards broke either personal or school records at the Ben Brown Invitational and Aggie Open.

UC Irvine sophomore Isaiah Jewett (Inglewood, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) collected Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honors as he ran a personal-record 47.38 to win the 400-meters at the Ben Brown Invitational.  He shaved .44 seconds off his previous best to rank first in the Big West and all of NCAA Division I this season.  Jewett’s mark is also 10th all-time at UCI, making him the first Anteater competitor to crack the program’s all-time top-10 in the 400m since Charles Jock in 2011.

UC Davis senior Rianna Goins (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS) turned in a personal-best 400-meter time to notch Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week accolades.  Fresh off of competing in the USATF Indoor Championships in the 600 meters, the first UC Davis Division I-era entrant to do so, Goins obliterated her previous PR at the Aggie Open.  She ran a blistering 54.84, beating her previous best by more than three seconds and becoming just the fifth woman in school history to break the 55-second barrier in the quarter.  Her time ranks first in the Big West by almost a second and a half.

Cal State Fullerton junior Trevor Gorwin (Yucca Valley, Calif./Yucca Valley HS) set a school record in the hammer throw to earn Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors.  At his home meet, the Ben Brown Invitational, Gorwin uncorked a throw of 199-10 (60.90m) for a new PR and Cal State Fullerton record.  He placed third in the event.  Gorwin also competed in the shot put, and fared well, winning the event with a mark of 58-01.75 (17.72m).  That performance also was a personal-best, and ranks first in the Big West and third in the NCAA West Region.

Two standouts shared the Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Week award as De’Ondra Young and Barbara Coward both had record-breaking performances.  Young continued her rapid improvement for Long Beach State in the hammer throw, breaking her personal record by 19 feet, 6 inches at the Ben Brown Invitational.  She landed her heave at 198-09 (60.57m), just 1 and 1/2 inches shy of the school record set one year ago by two-time Big West champion and NCAA qualifier Fatima Vergara.  In just two weeks, Young has bettered her PR by over 31 feet.  Her mark likely will exceed the historical criteria needed to advance to the NCAA First Round in Austin, Texas this May.  Young’s mark ranks No. 3 in the country.

Coward established a new personal and school standard in the discus with a mammoth toss at the Ben Brown Invitational.  She won the event with a meet record effort of 180-08 (55.07m), which also topped her previous PR by over two feet.  Already having ranked first in the Big West and the nation at 177-10, she became the only athlete in all of Division I to surpass 180 feet this season.  She also ranks No. 25 internationally.  Coward also added a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw at 168-04 (51.31m)
