Senior Duo Named Tennis Athletes of the Week


Seniors Morgan Mays of UC Santa Barbara improved to 8-0 in doubles and Alexis Valenzuela of Cal State Fullerton bettered her singles record to 9-0, the duo earning Big West Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades.

Mays Goes 4-0 in Singles and Doubles

UC Santa Barbara senior Morgan Mays (Malibu, Calif./Wake Forest) continued his solid play in singles and doubles to earn Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades.

Mays and doubles partner Simon Freund improved to 8-0 on the year.  The No. 6-ranked team nationally obliterated the No. 39 pairing of Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno of 21st-ranked Oregon, 6-1.  Mays also recorded a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Simon Stevens as the Gauchos nearly pulled off the upset.

He also won in singles and doubles against Loyola Marymount, helping the Gauchos to a 7-0 rout.

Valenzuela Remains Undefeated in Singles

Cal State Fullerton senior Alexis Valenzuela (West Covina, Calif./West Covina HS) earned her second Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolade after helping the Titans extend their school record win streak to 11 straight.

Off to the best start in school history at 11-0, the Titans received two wins from Valenzuela, who improved to 9-0 in singles this season.  She helped the Titans defeat Big West foe UC Irvine, 5-2, as Valenzuela topped Constance Branstine, 6-3, 6-3.  She also dispatched Seton Hall’s Luize Strike, 7-5, 6-1, in a 6-1 team win.

At No. 1 doubles with partner Camille De Leon, Valenzuela went 2-0, including a marathon battle against the Anteater tandem of Constance Branstine and Stephanie Hazell that end in a 7-6 (10) triumph.
