Alexander, Hyland Excel In Tournament Play

3/6/2017

Jessica Alexander provided the power on offense, and Sierra Hyland clamped down in the circle as the softball weekly awards were announced.

Alexander Wears Out Pitching at Springhill Suites Invitational

CSUN freshman Jessica Alexander (Oceanside, Calif./Vista HS) earned Big West Softball Field Player of the Week accolades after batting .500 with three multiple-hit games at the Springhill Suites Invitational in Idaho.

The third baseman helped the Matadors to a 4-1 record at the Springhill Suites Invitational with nine hits in 18 at-bats.  She also scored six runs and drove in nine more.  Alexander collected a double and a pair of home runs in helping CSUN score a collective 44 runs over the five games.  She slugged .889 for the tournament.

After a slow start to the tournament, Alexander heated up in the final three games with eight hits in her final 12 at-bats.  She went 2-for-2 with a stolen base and two runs scored in a 14-11 loss to Weber State.

Alexander then homered twice, finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a career-high five RBI, four of them via a grand slam, as the Matadors routed Boise State in five innings, 16-1.  She  delivered three more hits and four RBI in the tourney finale, an 11-7 win over Santa Clara.

Her nine RBI over the final two games gives her 15 for the season.

Hyland Moves Into Third All-Time For Pitcher of the Week Awards

Cal Poly senior Sierra Hyland (Visalia, Calif./El Diamante HS) tossed 12.1 scoreless innings in three appearances, helping her team go 4-0 at the ShareSLO Mustang Classic and earning her 13th career Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week award.

The 13 citations – her second this season – tie her for third all-time in Big West history with Long Beach State’s Meredith Cervenka (2002-05).  Brooke Turner of LBSU (2008-11) is No. 2 on the list with 14 awards and the all-time leader is also a former 49er, Erin Jones-Wesley (2011-14) with 15.

Hyland was nearly flawless, surrendering just three hits, walking none and fanning 17 hitters in her two starts and one relief appearance.

The right-hander tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over Middle Tennessee State.  In that game, she set a new program record with her 127th career appearance.  Hyland authored her shutout with 10 strikeouts.

She started and threw two scoreless frames with three strikeouts in an 11-0, run-rule victory over Sacred Heart.

In her second appearance against MTSU, Hyland came on in relief in a 2-1 victory in eight innings.  She threw the final 3.1 innings, while not allowing a hit and striking out four.  In improving to 2-0 for the tournament, she also equalled the Cal Poly record for wins at 64.
