Nelson's Career-High Three Binge Powers UC Irvine To Title
UC Irvine senior Luke Nelson (Worthing, England/The Henley College) earned his second career Big West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week award as he led the Anteaters to the conference regular season title with two 20-point performances.
The 6-3 guard averaged 25.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals as UCI defeated UC Riverside (68-56) on the road and UC Davis (79-49) at home.
Nelson notched a season-high tying 29 points in a winner-take-all showdown against the Aggies as the two teams entered the game tied for the Big West lead at 11-4. Nelson hit a career-high seven threes and made 10-of-17 shots overall as the Anteaters cruised to the win and their third regular season championship in four seasons.
Nelson chipped in with five rebounds and two steals. The seven threes gave him 246 for his career, placing him No. 10 in Big West history.
Against the Highlanders, Nelson hit four more threes en route to 21 points. He added four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
For the week, Nelson drained 11 of 22 threes and shot 48.5 percent (16 of 33) overall to help UCI win for the sixth time in seven games.
He has scored 20 points or more in four straight games and in five of its last six.
